We're an enormous used bookstore with over 500,000 used books. We are chock full of cats, gardens, coffee and an incredibly knowledgeable staff. Please feel free to use this page for store updates and info to any questions you may have. In addition we have our own personal website @ Bookbarnniantic.com. All four Book Barn stores are open from 11am to 6pm every day of the week. If you're looking to

sell us books we buy everyday between the hours of 11am and 6pm. If it's raining, snowing, or in fact, precipitating oddly in any way that may affect the books, give us a call- we may still be buying in small quantities. We buy used books for STORE CREDIT every day, and most days we'll be buying for CHECK, although during the winter we cut back, so GIVE US A CALL to make sure. Our entire inventory is made up of books that other people, people like you, bring us- so never hesitate to bring us your books. We may not take them, but we'd love to have a look.

Some shelves ask for more than a quick glance.

Our Civil War section holds stories of a divided nation, of courage and conflict, and of a war fought over slavery that shaped everything that followed. It remains the bloodiest chapter in American history, and one that still asks to be understood.

From Lincoln to lesser-known voices, from sweeping overviews to deeply human accounts, there is a great deal to discover here.

“Those who deny freedom to others deserve it not for themselves,” Abraham Lincoln

History is not always comfortable, but it is always worth reading.

For our last week, we’re heading out west.

This week’s shelves are filled with classic westerns, the kind that helped define American cinema. You’ll find Randolph Scott riding through dusty towns, Jimmy Stewart bringing his quiet intensity to the frontier, and Gary Cooper standing tall when the moment calls for it.

There are also some truly legendary titles in the mix, including My Darling Clementine, The Professionals, 5:10 to Yuma, The Bravados, Man with the Gun, Wagon Master, and McCabe & Mrs. Miller.

Altogether, 113 Western DVDs have joined the collection for this final release.

Over the past seven weeks, we’ve added action films, international cinema, horror, film school classics, noir, and now the wide-open landscapes of the western. It’s been quite a ride.

Everything is shelved and ready at C3.

Saddle up and come browse.

Week Six has arrived at Chapter 3, and the shadows have grown longer.

This week’s release dives straight into film noir, that smoky corner of cinema where the lighting is dramatic, the dialogue is sharp, and nobody completely trusts anybody else.

We’ve added roughly 140 noir titles, featuring the kind of cast list that could make any movie lover stop mid-aisle. Robert Mitchum, Barbara Stanwyck, Burt Lancaster, Peter Lorre, Sydney Greenstreet, Rod Steiger, Lana Turner, Ray Milland, and a few other familiar faces who knew their way around a trench coat.

You’ll find classics like Laura, The Mask of Dimitrios, The Verdict, Road House, Sorry, Wrong Number, and The Postman Always Rings Twice. We also have a handsome Fox Film Noir collection, perfect for anyone looking to spend a few evenings in morally complicated company.

And yes, we’ve even included a small reminder that sometimes the remake isn’t quite the same as the original.

Everything is shelved, organized, and waiting for you at C3. If you enjoy clever plots, dangerous glances, and lighting that makes every doorway look suspicious, this is your week.

Next week, we reach the final chapter.

Some bookstores feel less like businesses and more like old friends.

We are sorry to hear the news that another Connecticut bookstore, Whitlock's Book Barn, founded in 1948, will be closing its doors this spring. Independent bookstores carry far more than books. They hold decades of conversations, discoveries, and the quiet excitement of finding the right story at the right time.

To everyone who built, worked in, and loved Whitlock’s Book Barn over the years, thank you for the care you put into sharing books with the world. Bookstores like yours leave a lasting mark.

There are mysteries in life. Why socks disappear in the dryer. Where the cat goes when called. How we managed to fit this many mysteries into our Downtown store.

Follow the sign that says “Mystery Paperbacks Go This Way” and you’ll find shelves packed with John Sandford’s Prey series, stacks of James Patterson that could keep you busy until next winter, J.D. Robb lined up in tidy rows, Daniel Silva in impressive formation, and enough Steve Martini, Tess Gerritsen, Lee Child, and friends to keep you guessing for weeks.

If you’ve been looking for your next page-turner, it’s probably already here. Possibly right behind the one you didn’t know you needed.

Come get lost in the best possible way.

Week 5 of our massive DVD release has arrived, and class is officially in session.

Film School, Week 2 brings French Cinema, Italian Cinema, and essential films for true cinephiles. We’re talking Battleship Potemkin, The Bicycle Thief, The Conformist, and the Three Colors trilogy. The kind of movies that make you lean forward and say, “Oh. So that’s how it’s done.”

And then, because balance in life is important, we have Vintage Horror.

Universal’s classic monsters have marched in, including Dracula, Frankenstein, The Wolf Man, and The Mummy. Plus a generous helping of vampire films ranging from legendary to… well… adventurous.

Come browse. Take home a masterpiece. Adopt a monster.

First things first: What are you reading today while stuck inside?

Tell us in the comments. We want titles. We want genres. We want that book you have been meaning to finish since October.

As you can see, the Book Barn is officially snowed in. The paths have disappeared, the benches are wearing snow coats, and the barn looks like it belongs in a very dramatic winter novel.

The good news is that our staff and customers are home, safe and warm, and hopefully buried in something far more pleasant than snow.

So while winter does its thing out there, let’s talk books in here. What’s keeping you company today?

Week Four has arrived at Chapter 3, and we’re officially in Film School.

This week’s drop focuses on The Directors. Kubrick’s careful compositions. Altman’s layered worlds. Ang Lee’s emotional precision. Fritz Lang’s shadows and tension. Orson Welles redefining what a camera can do.

These are the filmmakers who changed how movies are made and how we watch them. The kind of films that reward a second viewing, and then a third.

All organized and ready to browse at C3. Bring curiosity.

More lessons ahead.

Some bookstores have cookbooks.

We have a cookbook room.

Tucked in the back of our downtown Niantic store is a glorious, slightly overwhelming, deeply comforting room devoted entirely to the art of feeding people. Shelves from floor to ceiling. Chocolate. Cookies. Celebrity chefs. Family dinners. Road food. Genius recipes. The kind of books that make you hungry just standing there.

It is less a section and more a culinary treasure hunt. You walk in thinking, “I just need one simple pasta recipe,” and walk out contemplating homemade croissants and a dinner party for twelve.

Come browse. Come plan your next feast. Come read about cooking instead of actually cooking. We understand.
