My love for the fiber arts began when I brought a few sheep into our family. This project sparked my journey into spinning, kni

tting, and eventually needle felting. The Romney sheep I own provide my favorite medium; I adore the texture of the wool and how effortlessly it blends to bring my animal sculptures to life. I constantly seek inspiration for my work—from the wild and photographs to my own beloved pets and farm animals. I started sculpting animals from wool in 2006, primarily using the fleece from my sheep. While I mainly create realistic animals, I’m increasingly inspired to develop whimsical designs from my imagination. The time I dedicate to sculpting each animal's face truly enhances the overall expression of my art. To fully appreciate my work, one must understand the needle felting process and the commitment required to achieve such intricate detail in wool. It brings me immense joy to know that my pieces are now part of private collections around the world!

Five days of felting with an amazing group of women here at the Marc Adams School of Woodworking in Indiana, and tomorrow is our last day
One of my favorite parts of teaching is watching everyone start with the same materials, then create something uniquely their own. Every project ends up with its own personality.

Tomorrow we’ll finish up our last projects before everyone heads home. It’s been such a fun week.

If you’d like to make these at home, both the Bear and Duckling are available as kits, and you’ll also find full step-by-step video courses for them in the Bear Creek Needle Felting Academy.

✨ There’s still time to join us! ✨

A few spots are still available for my Felt Your First Five Retreat—but registration closes June 20th.

If you've been wanting to learn needle felting, this retreat is the perfect place to start. Over five days, you'll create five projects while building a strong foundation in the techniques, materials, and sculpting skills that will help you continue felting with confidence long after you return home. Whether you've never picked up a felting needle or you're looking to strengthen your basics, this retreat was designed with beginners in mind.

And honestly...there's no better time to visit North Dakota.

July in the Sheyenne River Valley is beautiful. The prairie is green, the wildflowers are blooming, the days are long, and the pace of life slows down just enough to let you breathe. You'll enjoy home-cooked meals, spend time with fellow fiber lovers, get a behind-the-scenes look at Bear Creek, and immerse yourself in a week of creativity.

Come learn a new skill, make new friends, and experience the joy of creating by hand in one of my favorite places in the world.

💛 Registration closes June 20th, and there are only a few spots left. I'd love to welcome you to Fort Ransom this July.

What color would you expect this plant to dye wool?

A few weeks ago, I learned about a prairie wildflower called puccoon and its history as a natural dye plant. Then we realized it had been growing right under our noses all along. We found both Hoary Puccoon and Fringed Puccoon in a North Dakota pasture and had simply never noticed them before.

These native prairie wildflowers have bright red roots that were traditionally used as dyes and pigments. We harvested a small amount, dried and chopped the roots, then soaked them in alcohol to extract the color. The liquid turned a beautiful deep red.

Since the weight of the wool should roughly match the weight of the roots, we only dyed a small sample. At first, it looked like it might become a soft pinkish purple. We left it overnight and came back the next morning to see what color the prairie had created.

Who knew a native prairie wildflower growing quietly in a pasture could hold so much history—and color?

Have you ever heard of puccoon before?

This might be my cutest kit yet… 🦒

Meet the new Bear Creek Felting Giraffe Kit.

I designed this project to be approachable for beginners while still teaching important sculpting and shaping skills along the way.

Like all Bear Creek Felting kits, the wool comes from sheep raised on our North Dakota farm and is processed right here in our mill — from pasture to product.

I can’t wait to see the giraffes you create. ❤️

Out of all the materials they could have gathered, they chose wool to cushion and insulate their tiny home. And honestly, it makes perfect sense. Wool is warm, breathable, moisture-wicking, and naturally insulating - exactly what fragile eggs and baby birds need.

I think this may be the prettiest nest I’ve ever found, tucked into one of the hanging baskets at the shop. A little reminder that nature understood the value of wool long before we did. 🌿
