Meet the other half of the serene chaos behind Truthful Comics: Alvaro Cortes Jr.

Alvaro, or "Lancedanger" as he's known in the indie comics community, is someone who clearly doesn't believe in sticking to one genre.

And that's a good thing.

Because we're not interested in making the same comic four times, we're interested in telling different stories, in different genres, with a plethora of characters; we're bringing you the Truth in every panel!

Every Friday, we want to hear the truth about the comics that made you fall in love with comics.

So, indie creators, comic fans, artists, writers, collectors—we’re calling YOU out!

Maybe it was Spawn, maybe it was The Rocketeer or maybe it was a series we’ve never even heard of. That’s the beauty of indie comics, there are so many incredible stories being told outside the mainstream that it's impossible to know them all.

Why Indie Comics?

Because sometimes you want something you haven't seen five hundred times already. Sometimes you want to read something unpredictable, something personal, something that doesn't have to fit into an established cinematic universe.

Indie comics are where creators experiment, where weird ideas thrive, where new characters can become somebody's favorite character and where a small group of people can say: "Let's make this" and they don't have to run it by an army of suits in order to green light it.

That's why Truthful Comics exists.

COMICS ARE A TEAM SPORT.

We talk about the writer.

We talk about the artist.

We talk about the characters.

But behind almost every finished indie comic is a one or two men/women team doing jobs readers don't always notice.

Indie creators are not only writers and/or pencillers, they're also inkers, colorists, letterers, editors, graphic designers, printers, marketers, salespeople... you get the point, indie creators wear many hats.

Today we're giving a shout-out to everyone who helps turn an idea into a comic book.

The Story Behind Buy Indie Comics Day

Long before Buy Indie Comics Day became an international movement, it started with a simple idea: Independent creators deserved to be seen.
Manuel A. Carmona was one of the people who helped turn that idea into something real.
Alongside two other passionate advocates for independent comics, Manuel helped co-found Buy Indie Comics Day with the mission of shining a spotlight on the writers, artists, publishers, and creators working outside the mainstream comic industry.

It started small. Just three states: Illinois, Colorado, and Virginia. But the idea caught on.
Before long, Buy Indie Comics Day had expanded into multiple states, Puerto Rico, Ireland, London, and even Australia. What began as a grassroots effort became an international celebration of independent comics and the people who create them. And that was always the heart of it.

Not the logos.

Not the publicity.

Not the numbers.

The creators.

The person writing a comic because they have a story burning inside them.

The artist drawing late into the night because they believe in the world they're creating.

The small publisher taking a chance on a book nobody else would touch.

The local comic shop giving an unknown creator a place on the shelf.
Buy Indie Comics Day was about telling those people: YOU MATTER. Manuel believed in that message deeply and he fought for it. After the other two original members eventually moved on from the initiative, Manuel continued carrying the torch on his own for a long time.

He kept pushing. He kept promoting indie creators. He kept trying to bring attention to the incredible talent that exists outside the traditional comic-book machine. But eventually, even the strongest fighters have to recognize when they're fighting alone.

After years of putting his time, energy, and heart into the movement, Manuel ultimately hung up his gloves when it became clear to him that the level of support from the comic industry as a whole simply wasn't there.

That doesn't erase what he accomplished.

It doesn't diminish the creators he helped spotlight and it certainly doesn't erase how far the idea traveled. Three states became a movement that reached around the world.
That happened because people believed in the idea, and Manuel A. Carmona was one of the people who believed in it enough to fight for it long after the spotlight had moved elsewhere.

From all of us at Truthful Comics: thank you, Manuel, for fighting for the indies. Let's see who picks up the mantle now.

Long before “indie comics” became a buzzword, Manuel A. Carmona was in the trenches fighting for them.

As co-host of Think Indie and The Sunder Katz, two podcasts dedicated to the world of independent comics and part of the , Manuel has spent years giving a voice to creators, books, and ideas that might otherwise go unnoticed.

But his passion for indie comics has never been limited to simply talking about them.

Because creating an independent comic is about much more than putting a book on a shelf. It’s about fighting for readers to discover your work. Fighting for retailers to take a chance on you. Fighting for media coverage, convention space, reviews, sales, and recognition. And Manuel knows that battle firsthand.

His fight has always been about more than getting support and recognition for his own indie comics, just as importantly, it has been about standing beside every independent creator who has ever poured their time, money, heart, and soul into a comic and then wondered if anyone would notice.

That’s what makes voices like Manuel’s so important.

Indie comics aren't simply “the other comics”, they are where creators take risks, where new voices emerge, where stories that might never get the green light from a major publisher get the chance to exist snd sometimes, those creators just need someone willing to say: “Hey! This book matters. This creator matters. Give it a shot.”

Manuel has been saying that for a very long time.
Through Think Indie, The Sunder Katz, the Comics Crusaders Podcast Network, Yhe Cosmic Portal, Truthful Comics Podcast and his own work as an independent creator, he has continued to fight for the recognition that indie comics deserve. And the battle isn't over.

But the more people who champion independent comics, the harder it becomes to ignore them. Support indie creators, read indie comics, talk about indie comics, BUY indie comics, and share indie comics.

Because every great comic doesn't start with a giant publisher behind it, sometimes, it starts with one creator who refuses to give up, and sometimes, it takes a champion like Manuel A. Carmona to make sure the world hears their story.
