Spring is here, and the slabs are moving shallow! At Trio Tackle, we want to make sure you're ready for the spawn. Here’s how to target them as the water warms up:
The Shallow Move
As water temps hit the 50s and 60s, crappie head toward shoreline cover. Look for them in 2–6 feet of water around fallen logs, cattails, and brush.
Targeting the "Loners"
Remember: crappie often school by size. If you’re catching "d***s" (small ones) one after another, you're in a school of juveniles. The big "slabs" are often more solitary or hold slightly deeper and further away from the main group.
Pitching to Pockets
Use a long rod to quiet-pitch a jig into small openings in shallow weeds. Big females are spooky in thin water, so a stealthy approach is key.
Fan Casting Flats
Don't just fish the heavy wood. Big crappie often cruise shallow flats near spawning "highways." Use a light jig under a cork to cover water until you find a kicker.
🐟 Trio Tackle Tip: If the bite in the brush is all small fish, back off 10 yards and fish the transition drop-off. That’s often where the trophies are staging!
