I noticed new owners were clearing out a house they bought, tossing things in a trailer-sized dumpster in my neighborhood. They let me salvage the below mentioned NPD memorabilia. Come to find out, this badge I discovered was the Sergeant of my NPD contact, Mr. Dickason, who brought NPD retirees to my exhibit opening of the 100th Anniversary of “The Orig. Tough Copper,” my grandfather. Now Dickason can put the brass name plate I gave him early on, back with his respective badge. City of Norfolk Government Norfolk Police Department

Our exhibit celebrates the heroism of a Norfolk Police Officer hired 100 years ago. Come see the legend behind a police presence so strong, when it was heard that “Johnnie Rides Tonight,” criminals in certain parts of Norfolk would not engage in their illegal activities. His legendary career endures Prohibition, the Great Depression, WWII, and beyond, later becoming the 1st Superintendent of Norfolk’s Animal Bureau, where he protected the community from contacting rabies. I thank officers for their often thankless efforts to protect our community like my grandfather did so selflessly and passionately before them. Exhibit explores history of the Norfolk Police Department during Prohibition, the Great Depression, and beyond, via the legendary career of perhaps the bravest officer to ever wear a badge - Johnny Estes. I’ve unearthed his legend from a slumber for the 100th Anniversary of “The Original Tough Copper” in line with the historic year of America250. While NPD didn’t have his exact hiring date in April 1926, my passionate research led to that and other key pieces via an acquisition of rare documents, photos, and articles. I attended civic meetings, “Coffee with a Cop,” mayor’s state of the city address, etc, to invite top brass. Spent many weeks putting this together, so if anyone is interested in a legend that was an athlete on the streets, not to catch a ball, but to catch criminals, exhibit is open daily until my city kicks this son of Norfolk out of MacArthur Center Cool and Eclectic at the end of June.
