COACHING NOTE | “GOOD JOB” ISN’T ENOUGH.
“Good job” feels positive, but it doesn’t always tell an athlete what they did well.
Be specific.
Instead of:
“Nice job.”
Try:
“Great job keeping your shoulders square.”
“That was the right read.”
“Your footwork put you in position to make that play.”
When athletes understand why something worked, they have a much better chance of repeating it.
The same goes for corrections. Don’t give them five things to fix at once. Give them one clear detail they can act on during the next rep.
Good coaching isn’t just giving feedback.
It’s giving feedback athletes can use.
BE SPECIFIC. MAKE THE NEXT REP BETTER.
