Self-care isn’t a luxury. It’s maintenance for the mind, body, and spirit.

Today, I chose to slow down—not because I’m weak, but because I want to stay strong.

As Black men, we’ve often been taught to carry the weight of the world without stopping to care for ourselves. We show up for our families, our communities, our jobs, and everyone else. But we can’t keep pouring from an empty warehouse.

Taking time to rest, pray, exercise, reflect, or simply breathe isn’t selfish. It’s one of the healthiest decisions we can make.

Mental health begins with giving yourself permission to heal, recharge, and be honest about what you need.

That’s one of the reasons the Afro World Heritage Foundation® presented the “Stuff Inside My Head” workshop—to remind us that it’s okay to have real conversations about what’s going on inside. Strength isn’t pretending you’re fine. Strength is taking care of yourself so you can keep showing up for the people who need you.

Today, my self-care looked like this. Tomorrow, yours might be a walk, a workout, a conversation, a prayer, or simply taking a moment to be still.

Make time for yourself. You need it. You deserve it.

One little victory at a time.
