How much Yamato Indigo Dye do I need?

This is one of the questions we get most often. When deciding your vat size, there are a few key things to consider 👉

As a general guideline, we recommend using approximately 5% Yamato Indigo based on the total weight of the items you plan to dye. Just as important is making sure your vat is large enough for your items to be fully and comfortably submerged—without overly diluting the dye.

For example:
 A T-shirt weighing 200g requires about 10g of Yamato Indigo. However, 10g of Yamato Indigo only makes a very small vat (about 2–3 liters), which is not enough to comfortably submerge a T-shirt. In this case, it’s better to make a larger vat—such as a 10-liter vat using 30g of Yamato Indigo—and dye additional items at the same time.
