Little iron work this afternoon. So here goes, I have a Jack plane that was a piece of junk, and then I tore it apart a (let's say) fettled it quite a bit and tossed in a nice thick new iron. Suddenly, it is a pretty nice little jack. However, the adjuster always bugged me because it threads in reverse and loses engagement on extension, so I always needed to keep the cap iron backed off so that I could get enough throw on the iron to cut. Well, today I needed to sharpen it after use and decided to just go and "camber" the iron. It came out awesome. The throw on the iron is great and it will be a very nice stock removal jack now. One word about camber quickly.... Most "users" 80-100 years ago cambered their irons. This IS NOT A SCRUB CAMBER. Today, folks want their irons "flat" because very few people actually "work" with their planes... This camber is about 6-7" radius. 100 years ago, that was a "standard user camber"... Today, folks call it a scrub plane...

Anyone that is interested in trying some "chainsaw milling" like we do here, there is a pretty super deal right now from Huztl.net on their "Granberg type Alaskan Mills". I have the original Granberg 36" that I've been using and am very happy with the quality, HOWEVER, these Huztl mills are REALLY cheap right now with "free shipping". I decided to grab a 48" mill and it was $100. The Granberg 48" is almost $300. Now, this isn't the "quality" of a Granberg, but if you want to try this out without making a huge investment, this is the way to go. They have a 24", 36" and 48". I wouldn't get the smaller mills for the price difference. I'll do a review on this $100 dollar mill sometime in the next couple weeks.
