Youth employment doesn't happen by chance. It happens through partnership.

In Mayor Johnson’s remarks at our Goodwill Workforce Development Forum, he emphasized the shared responsibility of employers, community organizations and government to create meaningful opportunities for teens and young adults. He also challenged us to engage young people directly, recognizing that effective solutions start with listening to their voices and experiences.

As he reminded us, "When we invest in people, we're saving lives, we're creating opportunities, we're building futures." A powerful call to continue prioritizing the next generation and ensuring every young person has a pathway to success.

Young people aren't asking us to lower the bar. They're asking us to build a bridge.

At our Workforce Development Forum fireside chat and panel discussion, leaders challenged us to rethink how we support youth success: embracing flexible pathways, meeting young people where they are, leveraging social media as a tool for connection and ensuring accessibility goes beyond visibility. The conversation reinforced a critical truth: nothing for youth without youth.

Young people bring resilience, fresh perspectives and the ability to adapt to a changing world of work. Real impact happens when we recognize those strengths and create environments where they can build on them, navigate new challenges and thrive for the long term. Because success isn’t just about getting the opportunity. It’s about what young people can do with it, 90 days later and beyond.

We recently had the opportunity to experience the energy and enthusiasm of the students at Urban Prep Academy in Chicago.

With the help of Goodwill leaders and volunteers, students worked in teams to develop and present ideas for community initiatives that could address local needs and create positive change. The creativity, thoughtfulness and insight they brought to the challenge reminded us why it's so important to invest in the next generation. These young leaders aren't waiting to make an impact someday. They're already thinking about the challenges around them and imagining solutions.

At Goodwill, we believe anyone should have the opportunity to discover their strengths, explore their potential and build a path toward a meaningful future. That's why supporting Chicago's youth is such an important part of our mission. After hearing the ideas, aspirations and determination shared at the Youth Summit, we're more optimistic than ever about what that future can look like.
