was the first African American woman to graduate the University of Virginia (UVA) department of anthropology, with Ph.D., the first African American woman to graduate UVA, with Ph.D., and the second African American to graduate UVA with Ph.D. She majored in cultural anthropology with a specialty in the Family, published seven books in her areas of expertise and twenty articles in high tier journals. Also, Shaw-Barnes is an experienced guest on local, regional, and national radio and television talk shows. Bennie Mamaduke Barnes earned a master’s degree in Education Administration and Supervision at Hampton Institute, Virginia, and supervised offices in Norfolk, VA, Washington, DC, and Philadelphia, PA in the United States Defense Department.
