If I were asked, Augusten Burroughs, as a gift we offer you either this Picasso, that Vermeer, an 18th Century French Pastoral featuring chickens or this midcentury acrylic on canvas Connecticut American painting of identical twin girls, I would absolutely choose this painting of twins. I am wildly in love with this painting because both twins clearly despise the painter who executed his portrait while looming above them, because that’s easier lowering one’s self to their height or the girls up higher on a box, say. The twins wear identical versions of the most hideous pinafore dress ever created. And how did their hair get that little flip? Think nature did that? Think again. That was mom, with a boiling-hot curling iron pressed against their sculls. Which is probably what set the tone for the rest of the day, all of which resulted in this painting. The twins clearly loathe the ehe experience of being painted, being forced to hold hands, and the twin on the left might be planning something nefarious.

This important historical bible was printed by Christopher Barker, London and re-bound at some point in its history in gilt-stamped calf’s leather with marbled boards. The bible consists of multiple sections. The first section is known as “Speed’s Genealogies.” It was created in 1638 by English cartographer Sir John Speed. Obviously, this was added to the original older bible when it was re-bound. Speed’s Genealogies is a biblical genealogy, and this bible features a complete example, with both the title page and the following 34 pages of his engravings intact. The Old Testament, Apocrypha, New Testament, Psalms and Hymns are all here as well as prayer pages at the very end. It’s an astonishing work of art: each letter pressed deep into the thick paper. Every inch of it is gorgeous, fascinating, profound and important.
