Sarah Mistele Bechler was born in Oklahoma but raised primarily in Michigan where she lived in a 1860's farmhouse. With an artist mother who loved to shop for primitives out East it was only natural for Sarah to be drawn to all things primitive. Sarah began doing shows in the mid 1980's with cloth dolls she made and dressed in vintage clothing and antique shoes. She traveled to Atlanta, Nashville,

and Sturbridge but it was at a show in Michigan where she first saw primitive hooked rugs. She fell in love instantly and signed up for classes with the artisan who was selling the rugs. Sarah now lives in a small historic town in Michigan where she hooks and produces her rugs, chairs and purses. "It is a very satisfying art form and working with hand dyed wools and linen takes me back to my primitive roots," says Sarah. She also teaches rug hooking and has enjoyed opening her home to many Japanese women whose husbands have been assigned to work in the US for 3-5 years. These woman are so talented and take to rug hooking immediately! It is so bittersweet though as she has to say goodbye when they are assigned back to Japan. But new members join and new friends are made. Rug hooking allows Sarah to connect with the past while also making sure this amazing craft continues on for future generations. Romans 10:9-10

The stunning town of Newport, Rhode Island will be the site of the 250th birthday celebration retreat!!! 🇺🇸 Maggie, Aubrey and I will be hosting at the fabulous Royce properties enjoying both houses built in 1750 and meticulously renovated to blend antique charm with modern luxury. The dates are October 11-16th. Check your calendars as there will only be room for 12 women to come and experience this once in a lifetime celebration in a place where history comes alive!!! Well here we go again… first surgery was not successful so 10 months later we are doing it again and adding some work on my wrist too this time. Merry Christmas to all of you and just want to say thank you to all who have supported me and Old Glory not only this year but through the past 10+ years. So many of you have become friends and have supported me through tough days. There aren’t words to say how thankful I am for this community ❤️ Looking forward to more creating and hosting one of a kind retreats in 2026….Praise be to God for His unspeakable gift of Jesus who we celebrate at Christmas! The Prince of Peace! Blessings ❤️🇺🇸

5 years ago today Jesus decided it was time for my sweet Momma to come see the place He had prepared for her….she was my best friend, creative partner and such a prayer warrior for all who needed prayer. She left big shoes to fill…I’m doing my best to follow in her footsteps and to be a blessing to everyone God puts in my path…you were such a great example Mom. I was so blessed ❤️
She was 95 in this picture standing by the rug she had submitted of a Maggie Bonanomi pattern to the Sauder Village rug hooking show… her work was amazing😍 🇺🇸
