Hi. I'm Amy. The person behind Hare and Bear Co.

In a world where people tell you not to take things personally, I do 👋.

A few things to know about me:

- I am a big family person. Besides my own family of 4 (+ multiple pets), I am a sister, daughter, and lucky aunt to several nieces and nephews.
- Sourcing from local flower farmers is my jam. A full car and cold room are what dreams are made of.
- I love being prepared, and I geek out over mechanics. I'm always experimenting and running trials with different methods.
- I believe in being a part of your community and supporting the people and programs that make the community thrive.
- Learning is a love language. It's why I attend workshops and practice and create just for fun. I know I can always improve.

I think it's easy to forget people are behind small businesses and let the relationship be purely transactional. That gives me the ick.

I practice what I call "wholehearted floristry". It's about honoring time and place, and allowing seasonality to influence my designs. There's intention and thoughtfulness behind each floral design.

Two things I'm really honing in on lately. Layering and the color green.

1. ) Layering - You have to be very intentional about what you're layering or this can come off as very cluttered and messy. When you choose pieces that work with the shape you're trying to create and the color story you want to tell, your piece is more cohesive.

2.) Green is not a neutral. I think green or green foliage can often be used as a filler or to cover gaps. However, if you choose a green that does not go with the rest of your stems, then it can actually end up taking away from an arrangement. For example, if I had chosen more blue or sage greens, it would have detracted from the overall piece.

Also, sedum is one of my favorite flowers this time of year. Love the pop of color and texture she adds.

When clients trust you, there's a creative freedom that comes from that. ⁠

It can be limiting to use flower photos for you inspiration. Yes, they give me an idea of your style and color preferences, but there are likely a myriad of seasonal flower options you don't even know to consider. That's why I would much rather you tell me how your want your flowers to feel or how they play into your wedding or special event. ⁠
⁠
When you trust your floral artist, you allow yourself not to get caught up in a particular flower but how the pieces will come together and be harmonious.

As a floral designer in St. Louis, there are 3 things I do differently than most.

1.) No floral foam. There's no need for it.

2.) I don't follow trends. I'm only designing pieces that feel like "you".

3.) I only work with locally grown flowers. We love our local flower farmers here at Hare and Bear Co.

There's probably more than 3 things I do differently than most floral designers, but these are some of the most important.

Come along with me as I prepare for my hand-tied bouquet workshop at Bowood Farms .

10 days out, I source the flowers from the collective of local growers nearby. The week of the workshop, I pick up flowers, get them processed, and hold them in my flower cooler.

The day of, I load up my car and head to Bowood. This particular morning, I left around 8:15 am to arrive by 9. Then, I unload, set up for the workshop, and await all the participants.

After a demonstration by yours truly, everyone gets to create their own beautiful bouquet 💐!

Planning a fall wedding? Here are 3 seasonal flowers I highly recommend for your flower design that can get overlooked.

1.) Heirloom mums - these late fall-blooming flowers come in a variety of beautiful colors and often grow on long stems.

2.) Celosia - another flower that grows in a diverse range of shapes and colors. I love how the plume varieties can mimic colorful grass and add a bit of funkiness to a piece. Cockscomb varieties add great visual interest and texture.

3.) Sedum - this one is fantastic fresh or dry. I love to use it to add depth to large installations and centerpieces and its reliability out of water makes it a winner for wearables like boutonnieres and corsages.

To be a floral designer people specifically reach out to is something I didn't expect when I first started out.
