Spent the morning at my dear friend's magnificent home Youpon, Circa 1848. It is architecturally unique, being built on a raised brick ground level. The octagonal room at the rear was originally one of a pair. The Rutherford Family rescued the array of buildings behind Youpon from throughout the region to prevent them from being destroyed. Each were moved, restored, and are once again functional spaces. Youpon is one of Wilcox County’s many architectural treasures. Our final stop on the Wilcox Historical Society 's Day Trip to Montgomery was the magnificent Alabama Capitol Building, Circa 1851. From its original twin cantilevered spiral staircases to its beautiful dome, monumental gasoliers to the trompe l'oeil ceilings, it is spectacular. The site of so much of our nation’s history, this building witnessed Jefferson Davis' Inauguration in 1861 and Martin Luther King's "Our God Is Marching On!" Speech in 1965. It witnessed Lurleen Wallace's Inauguration as our first female governor in 1967 and two Inaugurations of Wilcox County’s own Governor Kay Ivey , the longest serving female governor in US History and Alabama's longest serving Governor of consecutive terms. Take the time to see it and soak in its rich architecture abd history. After lunch the Wilcox Historical Society was given a wonderful tour of the First White House of the Confederacy. This beautifully preserved home contains a rich collection of furniture, decorative arts, and personal items belonging to the Davis Family. The collection of American Empire and Classical Furniture is exceptional and includes several Alabama made pieces. A fantastic museum on the front lawn of the Alabama Archives. Go see it! Our fascinating journey with the Wilcox Historical Society continued at the Alabama Department of Archives and History. Director Steve Murray and his amazing team took us to the vaults to see items from Wilcox County's History including the True Blue's Flag from the Civil War and so much more. If you haven't seen the Voices of Alabama exhibit and the new Military Museum, they are a must! We were treated to a fabulous lunch catered by Joyce’s Catering of Selma. Alabama is blessed to have such an amazing Archives and Museum. Go see it! What an incredible day with the Wilcox Historical Society ! We started our day as guests of Governor Kay Ivey at the Governor's Mansion for a reception celebrating the Female Institute's Restoration. It was the perfect start to a day full of history, fellowship, and fun. Thank you to the Governor's entire team for such a warm welcome. We are blessed to have such a wonderful Governor in Alabama, the longest serving female governor in US History. Stay tuned for more pictures of this exceptional day.
