Café de Olla
She’s back! The Whirlwind seasonal favorite consisting of a sweet/spicy blend of piloncillo, clove, cinnamon, turbinado sugar and star anise, is making its triumphant and charitable return. C de O will be available from September 15th through October 15th, with a portion of the sales benefitting The Young Center for Immigrant Children’s Rights. The hype is real. Salted Maple Oat Shaker
While Pumpkin has a monopoly on Fall Drinks, I submit that Maple should be firmly a part of that conversation. We use 100% pure maple syrup, our workhorse 513 espresso, shake that sucker with some ice and garnish it with Himalayan Pink Salt. Salt and coffee, IYKYK.

Yes, we build fences too.

Our friends at Opportunity Knocks (OK) had a bit of a woodland creature situation! Their Knockout Farm, which grows high-quality veggies for their enterprise and wellness programs, became the hottest new dinner spot for some hungry local deer. We had just reached out to OK to see how we could pitch in with some volunteering, and the timing couldn't have been better.

With some guidance from Harlow R., Knockout’s Farm Coordinator, We spent our Tuesday morning digging holes, putting up posts, and putting up fencing. We had a blast helping out!

Breakfast Burrito popup is back -- this Friday August 21 8am until they are gone.

Donnie Biggin's from Bobby's Eastside will be on the flattop again. He'll be preparing their big ol' tortilla stuffed with fluffy eggs, pork sausage, fajita peppers, onions, crispy home fries, shredded cheddar, with a side of house made salsa verde.

This Friday we'll be hosting Young Center for Immigrant Children's Rights at Whirlwind.
They will be sharing information about volunteering as well as help register participants for their walk, run or roll fundraiser - Waymaker Mileage Challenge.
Whirlwind will also cover the registration fees for the first 10 customers that signup for the Waymaker Challenge.

Challenge Details
Dates: September 1–30, 2026
Goal: A collective 25,000 miles logged from anywhere, honoring the journeys of immigrant youth.
Fundraising Target: Participants are encouraged to raise $198, symbolizing the average length of stay in detention for an immigrant child.
Registration: Sign-ups are available online www.theyoungcenter.org

About the Young Center
It's the only program in the nation that provides independent Child Advocates to unaccompanied immigrant children in government custody, whose job it is to advocate for the children’s rights and best interests. They are appointed to the most vulnerable children, including those forcibly separated from their parents at the border, children with mental or physical disabilities, children who are victims of human trafficking, and children who have witnessed or experienced violence.

While in custody, these children are separated from their parents and caregivers. As such, they serve as trusted adults to advocate on their behalf, to ensure they have legal representation, to advocate for their safety and well-being, to ensure decision makers, including immigration judges and asylum officers, consider their best interests.

Limited Release No. 2: Kenya, Karinga Factory

Our second release in the Limited Release series takes us to the Karinga Factory in Kiambu, just north of Nairobi. A region home to some of the most celebrated coffees in the world.

Kenyan coffee is famous for a reason: vivid fruit notes like currant and passionfruit that come, in part, from the SL varieties bred in the 1930s by what's now the National Agricultural Laboratories. And this lot doesn't hold back. If our Ethiopia Ardi and Uganda Rwenzori lean fruit-forward, this Kenya takes it a step further still. In the cup are intense juicy orange and passionfruit notes. Cover it all in a sticky, caramel sweetness, and you get a cup that's bold, bright, and beautifully balanced.

This coffee comes from the Gitwe Farmers Cooperative Society, founded in 1983. Today, around 650 smallholder farmers (each cultivating about a hectare of land) deliver cherry to the Karinga washing station, supported by a field committee that helps with everything from seedling distribution to fertilizer guidance to quality assurance.

✨ Limited Release - Rwanda Abadatezuka ✨
Our first coffee under the Limited Release Series banner comes from the western province of Rwanda: a remarkable lot produced by the Abadatezuka Co-op in Nsinduke Village and sourced through our partners at Cafe Imports.

In the cup, expect a vibrant profile that bridges some of our favorite coffees. It shares the brightness of Ethiopia Ardi and the chocolate depth of Uganda Rwenzori, while offering its own distinctive character: cranberry at the forefront, layered with notes of grape, red plum, and delicate hibiscus florals. Amongst our team the note of a fancy candy bar has become synonymous with this coffee!

Nestled between Lake Kivu and the Nyungwe Forest, coffee farms in the Cyato sector sit at elevations of 1,850–2,200 MASL, creating the ideal conditions for slow cherry maturation and exceptional bean density. The region’s rich soils, native pollinators, and zero synthetic inputs come together to express this coffee's unique profile.

As this is the first time we have had the pleasure of roasting a coffee from Rwanda, we are eagerly awaiting impressions of your first sip! Available now for canister fills, retail bags, and on bar for pourovers!

New Coffee Release: Ethiopia Ardi

The introduction of the Ethiopia Ardi to the menu is not only a new coffee to Whirlwind but a return of a blueberry forward Ethiopian natural! A signature flavor profile for our coffee menu, the Ethiopia Ardi represents some of the best coffee grown in the Sidama region. Sourced by Keffa Coffee Importers, the Ardi is tailored to match the signature blueberry, tropical, tea like profile all year round by selecting the best lots from that year's harvest.

This Ethiopia Ardi is produced by Daye Bensa, a private, family owned coffee producing and exporting company based in Ethiopia. They work closely with local farmers in the Bensa, Sidama area, own multiple washing stations (including the Shantawene washing station where our lot from last year was sourced from), and manage the exportation of the coffee. Daye Bensa holds a reputation for consistent production of award winning coffee.

We are so excited to get this latest offering from Ethiopia into your cup! The best way to experience the diversity of our coffee menu is through our canister program. Come on by the roastery at 513 Madison St to pick up your own canister and fill it up for the first time with this delicious new coffee.
