Shakshuka — eggs poached in a spiced, bubbling tomato sauce — is the kind of meal that works for brunch, lunch, or a lazy dinner. Oaktown’s Harissa blend brings the depth: paprika and cumin lay down a smoky base, cayenne adds gentle heat, and a touch of cinnamon and caraway give it that signature North African warmth. Finish with a drizzle of tahini and plenty of crusty bread to scoop up every last bit.

This delicious sauce also works great with meatballs, as the base of a lasagna, or add a can of lentils or cooked ground beef for a spiced pasta sauce.

This Saturday, our Oakland shop is getting a little sweeter. ❤️

Shades of Sugar (Shades of Sugar Bakeshop) is taking over 546 Grand Avenue on June 20 (11am – 3pm) for a Father’s Day pop-up featuring a macaron collection unlike anything you’ve tasted. Each flavor is inspired by a Bay Area maker dad.

Yes, that includes a Persian Lime Curry macaron by our co-owner John Beaver. We wouldn’t have it any other way.

Chicken Salt is the condiment Australians put on everything – especially hot chips (aka fries). Despite the name, there’s no poultry in sight. It’s a savory, umami-forward seasoning blend that lands somewhere between garlic salt, onion powder, and a really good bouillon cube.

We created ours in collaboration with Oakland Roots and Soul SC as part of a food celebration welcoming the Socceroos to Alameda this summer for the World Cup — giving Australia a taste of home, and giving Oakland something new to reach for. Ours layers in yeast extract, MSG, paprika, caraway, celery seed, and a few other savory heavyweights for an Oakland twist on a Southern Hemisphere classic. Limited edition. Gone July 31st.
