Libraries have been some of Asé Arts’ most meaningful community partners. 📚🎨

Beyond books and information, libraries create welcoming spaces where people can gather, explore, learn, and connect. For us, they have become an incredible place to bring creative experiences directly into the community—inviting people to slow down, make something with their hands, and reconnect with their own creativity.

Through our library programming, participants explore history and culture, learn new artistic skills, experiment with materials, and discover the stories that live within creative traditions.

And perhaps most importantly, these programs bring people together. Families create side by side. Young people learn from elders. Parents rediscover the joy of making. Different generations share stories, skills, and experiences around the same table.

This is the power of community arts programming: creating space to make, learn, connect, and belong.

We’re grateful to the libraries that continue to open their doors and make creativity accessible to their communities. 💛

Kicking off our Black August: Artists of Resistance we’re highlighting one of our favorite artists to teach Betye Saar, whose powerful storytelling and inventive use of found materials have made her a defining voice in contemporary art.

Working from her Los Angeles studio since 1962, Saar has spent more trecontextualizedcreating assemblage works that bring together objects, images, symbols, and fragments of history. Her practice invites us to look closely at the stories embedded within everyday materials and consider how they can be reclaimed, recontextualized, and transformed into powerful narratives of Black identity, history, spirituality, and resistance.

Betye Saar’s was a pioneering figure of the Black Arts Movement during the 1960s and 1970s. With work held in the permanent collections of more than 60 museums. Her work reminds us that materials carry memory—and that artists have the power to recontextualizing historical narratives, challenging racism, societal, and political stigmas.

This August, we’re learning from artists who use creativity as a form of resistance, storytelling, and reclamation.

Community partnerships are what help Asé Arts programming shine. ✨

We recently joined a group of youth at RYSE to activate the raised garden beds on campus—clearing out old debris from the winter and preparing the beds to plant new plants.

Together, we talked about the importance of slowing down, connecting with nature, and learning through plant medicine and the wisdom the earth offers. Replenishing the beds with new soil and planting flowers that will be harvested and used in our upcoming natural dye workshop this June.

This is what community-rooted arts education looks like.

We’re honored to be invited by the of The Links, Incorporated to facilitate a 5-week course supporting their annual national poster competition.
‘UNITY THROUGH ART’

Working with a group of 5th graders from MLK Elementary in West Oakland, we’re guided young artists through foundational skills that strengthen both observation and confidence.

One of our favorite exercises focuses on breaking down complex forms into simple shapes—helping students learn how to see. By observing where the body naturally bends and shifts, they begin to understand proportion, movement, and structure in a more accessible way.

It’s always powerful to witness that moment when something that once felt complicated becomes clear—piece by piece.
