I don’t pay sales tax on qualifying cards I buy for resale from eBay, Fanatics, Alt, Whatnot, Goldin, DealMotion, etc.

I’m in California.

If you’re also in California buying inventory for resale and you don’t have a resale certificate, think about the math.

If you and I are bidding on the same $1,000 card and you’re paying roughly another 10% in sales tax while I’m making a qualifying purchase for resale, I effectively have about a 10% cost advantage before either of us even sells the card.

Now do that over hundreds of thousands of dollars in purchases.

That matters.

Stuff like this separates visiting the hobby from actually building a business in it.

Nobody taught me this stuff when I was coming up. I learned a lot of it the expensive way.

If you’re serious about buying and selling cards for a living, learn what a resale certificate is, when you can use one, and what your responsibilities are once you have one.

And talk to a tax professional (aka not me)

I made this video in May 2025

I told the story of a lady I met during the card boom in 2021, who knew nothing about sports cards, but all she saw was how fast the money was flying, and that “maybe I should do this instead of nursing school for now”

I told a story of people camping out for sealed boxes and getting into literal fist fights (not for Prismatic Evolutions ETB’s to find Umbreons, but for 2021 Mosaic NBA Megas to find Zions)

I said, if you thought the way things are, would be the way things would always be, you’d lose a lot of money

The video got a lot of attention because of the boldness of the statement, but it was really about being prepared and pragmatic. About not over extending yourself and getting caught with the bag.

Repetition > appreciation has always been my approach. Sure I miss out on 10x, 20x, 100x returns - but all except the outliers of outliers that are balanced out by the amount of holds that didn’t pan out, pale in comparison to the direct net positives and indirect net positives that came from repetition, motion, etc… “it’s better to get some of the money all of the time than all of the money some of the time”
