It’s with very misty eyes that I announce that this was Ryann’s last week at TBW—after five years here, she’s off for new adventures locally. We are very sad! But we’re also really happy for her.

Anyone who’s ever been in this shop knows how integral Ry was. She started just three weeks after I opened, and within a year was helping me order books nearly full-time. She came on as the manager and book buyer the next year and fully shaped the shelves with niche feminist picks, q***r romance, cool translated works, and more. I have said and will always say that I legitimately could not have built this business to be what it is without her; we learned how to operate a bookshop together, and she is why we’re both successful and so special. She was the partner-in-chaos I could lean on, go to, travel with, celebrate and commiserate with. She had the best book recommendations—which will remain here!—and I know so many regulars will miss talking to her about those at the bar. I have almost 1000 photos of us on my phone doing absolutely insane shoots and videos for the shop, and as I look back, I’m so grateful for all she gave over these five years. (Did I cry on her last day? Yes.)

She’s not 100% gone—she will continue to run the Q***r Romance book club on 3rd Thursdays, and pop in here and there for events. So make sure to look for her then if you’d like to say hello. She doesn’t have social media anymore (our resident Luddite) so you cannot DM her but I will pass on any love you want to send. A massive thanks to her, forever. We love you Ry!!

You don't have to be a member to attend, but it does give you reserved seating, discounts on any book or w**e bought in store, and a w**e to go with the book. So... what are you waiting for? You can also become a member of our other book clubs for discounts, but all are welcome for drop-ins, too. Sign up on our website under Subscriptions, or stop by the shop to pick up the book on your own for any of these.

It’s feeling like FALL out there—which makes sense because technically it is now, happy post-equinox—and Mickie is extremely prepared with the new and SO GOOD Athletic Brewing Co Festbier. Gives full Oktoberfest vibes but is also very mellow and smooth and kinda toasty and, best of all, low carbonation, because sometimes too much bubble is too much. NA lovers, consider this your transitional beverage. Very limited, so come snag while it’s around!

Next Saturday, let’s do the time warp (again). In honor of the late great Tim Curry, we’re screening ROCKY HOROR PICTURE SHOW here at 6pm on 10/3. Like all our movie events, it’s free and open to all. (Just please buy something.) Free popcorn too + happy hour Lambrusco, & always nonalcoholic options . Costumes are not required but 100% encouraged—if you really impress us, your first drink is on us—as is breaking out into song and/or dance. We showed this our very first fall 6 years ago, and can’t wait to bring it back

Next week, our come-one come-all book talk is back—and we're getting apocalyptic for it. ONE BIG BOOK does BIOLOGICAL WAR by Annie Jacobsen; probably our nonfiction book of the year, and probably one of the most terrifying but necessary you'll ever read. If you liked/were traumatized by NUCLEAR WAR, you'll want to read this. And then come talk about it with us! (It is also a great audiobook, PSA.) 6pm, free, no reservations needed, just a readiness to discuss the likely end of the world.

Big excitement: we're hiring!

If you love books, w**e, and good times, and you’re great at talking about the first two and creating the third, then come join The Buzzed Word team. We're looking for part-time year-‘round help, especially for weekends and afternoons/nights.

We know this sounds like a great place to work, and it is—the best! But it isn't a silly/simple job whatsoever. First, you must be a BIG READER—we can’t emphasize this enough, as books are the majority of the business—as well as a w**e drinker, though w**e expertise isn’t required; we can teach you to taste and pour! Additionally, you must be 21+, have a flexible schedule, and be able to lift a 40lb box of w**e as well as work several hours on your feet. Employees are retail associates and bartenders in one, so you have to be able to do both—and experience in either is a big plus. If you’re a fit, then send your resume and a note about why you’d like to work with us to [email protected] with the subject line JOB APPLICATION + YOUR NAME. Woo hoo!
