Last night, 25 years ago…
Across America, thousands of people went to bed believing tomorrow would be just another ordinary Tuesday.
246 people packed their bags, set their alarms, and went to sleep knowing they had a flight to catch in the morning.
2,606 people laid out their clothes, thought about meetings and deadlines, kissed their families goodnight, and prepared for another day at work.
343 firefighters went to sleep knowing that when the alarm sounded, they would answer the call.
60 police officers rested before another day of protecting strangers they may never know.
8 paramedics prepared for another shift of saving lives.
They made plans for tomorrow.
They said, “See you in the morning.”
They kissed their husbands and wives goodnight.
They tucked their children into bed.
Some probably forgot to say “I love you.”
Some may have left dishes in the sink, laundry in the dryer, an unfinished conversation, or a promise to call someone back tomorrow.
Because they believed they had tomorrow.
But tomorrow came…
and before the morning was over, everything had changed.
On September 11, 2001, ordinary people woke up and went about their ordinary lives, never knowing that a goodbye at the front door, a kiss before work, or a phone call from an airplane would become a family's final memory.
And while so many were desperately trying to escape the unimaginable, others were running directly toward it.
Firefighters climbed stairwell after stairwell while everyone else was coming down.
Police officers rushed into chaos.
Paramedics reached for the injured.
Strangers carried strangers.
People held hands.
People prayed.
And in some of the darkest moments our country has ever known, people used their final moments to call home for one reason:
To say “I love you.”
Twenty-five years have passed.
Children grew up without their mothers or fathers.
Parents grew old carrying the memory of a child they should never have had to bury.
Spouses learned how to live with an empty chair at the table and an empty side of the bed.
Families learned that grief doesn't follow a calendar.
And a nation learned just how quickly an ordinary morning can become a day that changes history forever.
So today, hold the people you love a little longer.
Kiss them goodbye—even when you're running late.
Make the phone call.
Forgive when you can.
Say the words you've been putting off.
Tell them you love them.
Because the people who went to sleep on September 10, 2001, believed they had tomorrow too.
Today, we remember every life taken too soon.
We remember the heroes who ran toward danger when every instinct told them to run away.
We remember the families whose lives were forever divided into before September 11th and after.
And we remember a country that, through unimaginable heartbreak, reached for one another.
September 11, 2001
25 years later, their names are still spoken.
Their stories are still told.
Their families are still remembered.
And we still promise…
Never Forget. ❤️🤍💙
