Walt Disney once said, "There is more treasure in books than in all the pirate's loot on Treasure Island."

Long before his stories appeared on screen, Disney found inspiration in books. Fairy tales, novels, folklore, and adventure stories helped shape the worlds and characters that generations have come to love.

At The Book Porter, we love reminders like this. Behind so many great ideas, discoveries, and creative pursuits is often a simple act: opening a book.

Researchers, educators, and parents across the country are paying attention to a troubling trend: fewer people are reading for pleasure, and literacy rates continue to decline. Recent data shows that reading scores among American students have reached some of their lowest levels in decades.

We don't believe a bookstore can solve a national literacy challenge.

But we do believe in the power of stories. We believe in children growing up surrounded by books. We believe in reading aloud, discovering new perspectives, and making time for long-form reading in a world full of distractions.

That's part of what we're building at The Book Porter.

As we embrace summer in Ocean Springs, we're thinking a lot about our young readers. We believe every great bookstore should have a place dedicated to them. A corner to curl up with a favorite story. A shelf that sparks curiosity. A space where a lifelong love of reading can begin.

Soon, it will be one of our favorite corners of The Book Porter.

When we think about the children's nook at The Book Porter, we aren't just thinking about books. We're thinking about future readers.

The stories we discover when we're young have a way of staying with us. They shape our imagination, expand our empathy, and often become the books we return to years later.

These are a few of the children's books that have stood the test of time and continue to find new generations of readers.

Vincent van Gogh, the brilliant artist we admire, was also an avid reader who found deep comfort in the written word. He described literature as an "irresistible passion," essential to his life just like bread. His favorite authors included Charles Dickens, Γ‰mile Zola, and Guy de Maupassant, alongside poetry from John Keats and timeless tales by Hans Christian Andersen.

Van Gogh saw reading as a sister art to painting, famously stating that "reading books is like looking at paintings." This perspective is beautifully reflected in his works, where he often depicted still lifes featuring the yellow-covered novels of modern French authors, capturing the joy of reading in his art. His letters are filled with literary quotes, showing how books provided him with emotional solace and a profound connection to humanity.
