More than 4,500 years ago, a queen of Egypt was buried with silver jewelry unlike almost anything else known from the age of the pyramids.

Her name was Hetepheres I — wife of King Sneferu and mother of Khufu, builder of the Great Pyramid.

Inside her hidden tomb at Giza, archaeologists discovered a gold-covered wooden box containing 20 silver bracelets, arranged in two sets of ten in gradually changing sizes so they could be worn along her forearms.

Their decoration was astonishingly delicate.

Across the silver surfaces, Egyptian craftsmen created repeated butterfly-like designs using tiny pieces of turquoise, lapis lazuli and carnelian.

But nearly a century after their discovery, modern science revealed another part of their story.

In 2023, researchers chemically analyzed surviving bracelet fragments. The silver contained traces of copper, gold and lead — and its isotopic signature pointed far beyond Egypt.

The most likely source was the Cyclades in the Aegean Sea, with the Laurion region of Greece another possible source.

Egypt had abundant gold, but no known domestic silver ore deposits. In the Old Kingdom, silver objects are remarkably rare.

That means the metal in Hetepheres’ bracelets may have travelled hundreds of kilometers through early Mediterranean exchange networks before Egyptian artisans hammered, annealed and shaped it into royal jewelry around 2600 BC.

Even the colored inlays tell a story of connections: turquoise was available from Sinai, while lapis lazuli ultimately reached Egypt through long-distance trade from regions far to the east.

These bracelets therefore preserve something larger than royal fashion.

At the very moment Egypt was building some of the greatest monuments in human history, materials were already moving across enormous distances — eventually arriving in the hands of craftsmen working for the family of the Great Pyramid’s builder.

Monumental stone showed Egypt’s power.
