Hi friends. Ogden poet Ryan Fischer needs our support. Ryan only recently moved his entire life to Alaska for work and on January 1, he suffered the unimaginable loss of a house fire that took everything—his belongings, his books, his writings, and his two sweet cats. There is no way to quantify this type of loss but we as a community can rally behind him to support him in getting back on his feet. Ryan played an important role at Happy Magpie. He was our most enthusiastic supporter. If you attended a poetry jam, you no doubt heard his work. His love for the written word is eclipsed only by his love and support for his community. ✨What a day. Thank you to our community members who helped us move out of our space today. I have about a million more things to say, but I’ll just give you our headlines: Our books will live on at Underground Books. Our bookshelves have found a home at Eborn Books at Newgate Mall. And Write Club will continue at Grounds for Coffee on 25th, 6pm every Tuesday—starting Jan 7. Oh and I drove a 26-foot U-Haul and lived to tell the tale.

Timing is a funny thing. Happy Magpie’s Ogden Poetry Exhibition archival magazine will be sealed into the 100-year time capsule in the cornerstone of the Union Station this weekend in celebration of the iconic train station’s 100th anniversary.

This means the poems our Write Club community wrote in spring of 2024 will be read by Ogdenites in 2124 when this time capsule is opened. They will know the writers immortalized in these pages. They will know the magic and camaraderie of this moment. They will understand the heartbeat of this community. How special is that?

Join us for the 100 Year Celebration and Time Capsule Rededication Ceremony on Friday, November 22, 5-9pm. There will be an orchestral concert and drone show. ✨

About the Book

The newly published irreplaceable: a collective praise poem for Great Salt Lake, composed by the poet nan seymour, is a community prayer for the replenishment of an ecosystem on a precipice. The book begins with a forward by Terry Tempest Williams which underscores the peril of this irreplaceable refuge and hemispherically essential lake.

Over 400 voices sing their praises in this chorus: sixth graders, brine shrimpers, birders, q***r artists, Indigenous elders, scientists, and spell-casters, alongside scores of others who proclaim this lake beloved. The poem is still being written as the vigil keepers write, sing, and dance in celebration of the sacred lake and all of the species she sustains. They dedicate their jubilance, grief, and reverence as they invite readers to join in bearing witness. Every voice counts. Our work will be finished when the lake is replenished and her personal right to flourish is fully protected.
