THROWBACK THURSDAY

Here’s one for the old-school HVAC and plumbing crowd:

There was a time when a hot-water heating system could circulate through an entire house...

without a circulator pump.

No ECM motor.

No variable-speed control.

No app.

Just physics doing its thing.

Old gravity hot-water systems were designed with large piping so heated water could naturally rise toward the radiators while cooler water returned to the boiler.

And those giant cast-iron radiators?

They weren’t just there to make moving day miserable.

They were part of a heating system engineered around natural circulation long before modern pumps and controls became standard.

Some systems even used expansion tanks tucked away in the attic.

Fast-forward to today and hydronic heating has changed dramatically.

Modern circulators, high-efficiency boilers, advanced controls, air elimination, zoning, and better system design give contractors options the installers of generations past could only dream about.

But the basic mission hasn't changed:

Somehow we're already halfway through August.

The days are getting a little shorter.

School sports are starting back up.

On Saturday, September 19th, one of our favorite traditions returns to Emerald Greens in Gouverneur.

The Russ Captain & Crew Golf Tournament was created to continue the giving spirit of our former owner, Russ McDonald, who was a longtime supporter of the Ogdensburg Boys & Girls Club.

Eighteen years later, we're still teeing it up for the same reason.

THROWBACK THURSDAY

There was a time when the most popular water feature in the neighborhood cost about $10.

You hooked it to the garden hose.

Turned the spigot.

And suddenly every kid within shouting distance appeared.

No splash pads.

No inflatable water parks.

No elaborate backyard setup.

Just an old metal sprinkler firing ice-cold water across the lawn while somebody yelled:

“DON’T KINK THE HOSE!”

Of course, we weren't thinking about water pressure, pumps, plumbing, valves, fittings, or where all that water actually came from.

We just knew it was HOT... and that sprinkler was about to fix the problem.

Funny how something as simple as turning on a hose depends on an entire water system working behind the scenes.

Nobody thinks about the boiler in August.

And honestly?

That's exactly why August is a pretty good time to think about the boiler.

Right now the windows are open.

The AC is running.

The lawn still needs mowing.

And the last thing anybody wants to think about is a mechanical room in January.
