DID YOU KNOW? One female crappie can lay up to 180,000 eggs in a single spawning season, but only a tiny percentage of those fish will ever make it to keeper size.

Right after hatching, baby crappie are vulnerable to almost everything in the lake. Bass, catfish, bream, birds, insects, and even larger crappie feed on them. They’re also extremely sensitive to environmental conditions during the spawn. A late cold front can slow growth and feeding, muddy water can make it harder for fry to survive, and sudden rises or drops in water level can leave nests exposed or destroy spawning areas altogether. In some cases, one bad weather event can nearly wipe out an entire year class of crappie.

But when conditions line up perfectly, stable water levels, warming temperatures, good spawning cover, and abundant plankton for fry to feed on, survival rates can skyrocket. Instead of only a handful surviving, massive numbers of crappie make it through their first year. That’s why a lake can seem full of undersized fish one season and then, two or three years later, suddenly produce giant slabs everywhere. Those “magic” years are usually the result of one exceptionally successful spawn years earlier.🎣
