✨ 31 Years of Keeping OKC Weird, Curious & Magical

We wanted to share an update following yesterday’s incident, as we know a lot of people in our community were deeply invested in what happened.

After the incident, we reached out to several metaphysical businesses in the surrounding area. Through those conversations, we learned that the individual had reportedly frequented multiple stores, and at least one other business indicated they may have experienced a similar issue. Based on the information available to us, we have concerns that merchandise may have been taken for the purpose of resale.

This is one of the most difficult parts of operating a small business.

We work hard to create a space that feels welcoming, magical, and accessible to everyone. At the same time, we have a responsibility to protect our merchandise, our employees, and the livelihood that supports our entire team. Like any retail business, we maintain policies designed to reduce theft and shrink. We regularly evaluate those policies against current retail practices while trying to make sure they don’t take away from the experience people have when they walk through our doors.

Historically, some of those policies have drawn criticism. We understand that not everyone will agree with every policy we have, but at the end of the day, these are the decisions we have made about how to responsibly protect our business. Unfortunately, situations like this are exactly why some of those policies exist.

As we continue working through the proper channels, the scope and value of the merchandise involved has become significant enough that the matter could potentially fall within the felony-level category under applicable law. We are allowing the appropriate authorities and process to determine what, if any, charges are warranted.

We have also taken a close look at how our existing systems were taken advantage of. We’ve identified vulnerabilities that allowed this situation to continue longer than it should have, and we are already making immediate changes to help prevent something similar from happening moving forward. We want to learn from this without allowing one person’s actions to fundamentally change the welcoming environment we’ve worked so hard to create.

We also know that rumors and gossip can travel quickly, especially on social media, so we want to clarify something we have already seen circulating: this individual has never been an employee of our store. They operated their own “business” independently and had no employment relationship with us.

Moving forward, we will continue communicating and working with other businesses throughout the Oklahoma City metaphysical community and surrounding areas. Small businesses are stronger when we communicate with and look out for one another, and we hope that sharing information through the appropriate channels can help reduce losses and prevent other local businesses from experiencing similar situations.

We greatly appreciate the support, messages, and concern we have received from the community. We also appreciate the other local businesses that have communicated with us as everyone works to better understand what may have been happening.

Our goal remains what it has always been: to protect our business while continuing to provide the welcoming, weird, wonderful, and magical space our community has supported for more than three decades. 🖤

If you have recently purchased herbs, oils, spells, or other spiritual items from Kurstin Thomas, we want to make you aware of a serious concern regarding stole merchandise being resold.

We have surveillance footage documenting Kurstin removing merchandise from our store without purchasing it. We have also identified merchandise from our store being offered through her Facebook activity, including in connection with spiritual products.

We are preserving the relevant documentation and addressing the matter through the appropriate channels. She was not employed by us to be clear. We will not be discussing additional details publicly at this time.
