Lazy J Woodworks

Lazy J Woodworks Handmade furniture and home goods. Hi. I'm Audrey Dodgen, a woodworker from Oklahoma City. Where it will go next, who can say?

In early 2014, I decided I need a new hobby, and picked up a knife and wood block to make my first coffee scoop. It turned out I have a genuine love for carving spoons and scoops and spatulas, and so this casual hobby turned into something more serious. Recently, it's expanded to even more complex projects, mostly small furniture items like benches and night stands.

Friends, I'm delighted to report that the shop is live! It's a pretty small drop and everything is a one-off, except the butter spreaders (I have four and may make another few). If you order by Thursday, it'll ship this week, otherwise orders will ship the week of August 4. Shipping is a flat $5, with a free local delivery option.

As always, I appreciate you taking the time to look and hope you find something you'll love.

Tool Tuesday

A lot of the carving work I do happens with gouges and chisels. I own 15 or 20, but these are the gouges I was carving with this weekend. Gouges have two critical dimensions: their width (typically measured in millimeters) and their sweep, which is a measure of how tightly curved they are.

Working on some new coffee scoops. Interesting how the wood on the right has aged, and how cutting into it reveals the beautiful colors we’re accustomed to in walnut pieces.

Amazing how that first coat of oil makes all the difference in the world. I also love that you can see the repeating grain across all three of these pieces. All three are sliced from the same block of heat-treated tiger maple.
