An open letter to the City of Olathe, KS Government council members, email addresses in comments.

Hello friends. My name is Anne Black and I own a small business in Olathe called kc grow co, formerly Children’s Orchard. We have been operating from the same location at 11933 S Strang Line Road since October 2002, nearly 24 years. We are in a special tax jurisdiction, OLAC6, and have collected and repaid over $2 million dollars in sales tax to the City of Olathe and State of Kansas in the last 24 years.

I am urging you to allow Starfish Project Foundation to operate from their proposed location at 16175 W 135th Street.

I own a resale store featuring gently used clothing, toys, and gear for kids newborn to teen. Our little store has grown up with the Olathe community and we can bear witness to the amazing organization that is The Starfish Project Foundation. What started as a way to re-allocate resources has transformed into an essential component of our Olathe Community. Many of our clients and 12 local employees have benefitted from the services that The Starfish Project Foundation offers.

When people sell things to our small business, we give them the opportunity to donate the items we are unable to resell to one of our two community partners, FosterAdopt Connect and The Starfish Project Foundation. Volunteers from each community partner come to pick up hundreds of items four times a week…for children. Olathe children deserve to be fed and clothed. Please help us do that. These kids are worth it.

If you vote “no” on the proposed relocation, please know that you are voting against children, against families. As a former elected official myself, I understand the ramifications of your vote. I hope you choose the children.

Do you know why this organization is called Starfish? It’s an old parable about a boy walking along the beach. He threw stranded starfish back to the ocean one by one. When a man told the boy that he couldn’t change the life of every starfish on the beach….he replied that even if he could save one starfish, it was worth it. It is still worth it to save one. You have been elected to have the power to save one child.
