Stromatolites are ancient fossilized structures built by microscopic microbes. They are incredibly special because they contain Earth's oldest known fossils (dating back over 3.5 BILLION years). These bacterial mats essentially created the oxygen in our atmosphere, making all subsequent complex life on our planet possible. They are the earliest known macrofossil evidence of life on Earth, representing roughly 80% of our planet's fossil history.
The "Great Oxygenation": They were among the very first organisms to photosynthesize. Over millions of years, they released enough oxygen to fundamentally change the Earth's atmosphere, preparing the way for plants and animals.
While most are ancient, living stromatolites can still be found today in hypersaline environments like Shark Bay, Australia, making them one of the oldest continuing lifeforms on the planet.
Many believe this stone acts as a portal to infinite knowledge, assisting in past-life regression and helping you understand your purpose on Earth.
