The Passageway Gallery

The Passageway Gallery We are a cooperative gallery established in 1981 giving local artists a place to show and sell their work.

Our location is in the historic Poppleton Block, built in 1886 by Andrew Poppleton. The Poppleton Block was designated an Omaha Landmark in 1982, and is listed on the National Register of Historical Places. Andrew Jackson Poppleton (1830-1896) was the second mayor of Omaha, in office for a few months from July to September of 1858. After his stint as mayor, Poppleton was a prominent real estate bu

sinessman and lawyer. Poppleton Street in Omaha is named after the former mayor. The gallery operates completely through the volunteer efforts of the artists whose work is on display. Every artist member spends 2 - 4 shifts each month greeting visitors, handling sales functions and performing duties necessary to the successful operation of the gallery. Each visitor is able to visit with an actual artist member of the gallery. Membership is held to a total of 22 artists, providing a blend of two dimension and three dimensional art that is sure to please many different artistic tastes. The Passageway is a very active participant in the Old Market Gallery Walks held once a month in the summer and spring. First Friday openings each month feature one or two gallery member's works, accompanied by hors d'oeuvres and refreshments. Gallery Walks and First Fridays are free and open to the public.

Today's Artist Spotlight is Marlene Meier of Meier Pottery. Marlene's path to pottery began not at a wheel, but in the ground. After earning a BA in Anthropology and an MA in Archaeology from UNO and UNL, she spent summers living in tents across the Midwest — a small crew, a few rattlesnakes, and a whole lot of digging. DIRT was her first love.

Pottery classes snuck in between writing field reports. When an apprenticeship opened at Springwood Pottery in Minnesota, she packed up and headed north to mix clay and sweep — you guessed it — more DIRT. After her apprenticeship, she returned to Nebraska to be close to family, throw high-fire pottery, and take on landscaping work. Still planting in dirt.

Today, Marlene fires her work in both electric and gas kilns. The electric kiln brings consistency to her slip work; the gas kiln encourages glaze movement and happy surprises. All of her functional pieces are microwave, oven, and dishwasher safe — made to be used, not just admired.

Whether she's digging it, mixing it, sweeping it, planting in it, or throwing pots with it — Marlene loves dirt. And the beautiful things that come from it.

Ken Smith is a retired Air Force meteorologist and Passageway Gallery member since 2015 — a landscape photographer whose lens finds beauty in wide open spaces, mountains, oceans, and, increasingly, the night sky.

His process is anything but accidental. Ken plans each Milky Way shoot from home — calculating moonless windows, tracking the galaxy's arc, and researching locations with minimal light pollution. He scouts by day so he's never stumbling in the dark, arrives an hour early to set up low-level lighting for his foreground, and finishes the work back home in Photoshop. The result: images that feel both vast and intimate.

His favorite photo came from that process — shot at the International Car Forest in Nevada's Mojave Desert, where 40+ painted and repainted vehicles jut from the earth beneath a blazing Milky Way. It's otherworldly, and entirely intentional.

His best-selling piece, titled "The Spirit Lives On", tells a different kind of story. In January 2016, a gas line rupture ignited a fire in the building directly across from our gallery — home to M's Pub and Nouvelle Eve. As an arctic front swept through Omaha, temperatures fell below zero for 40+ hours while crews battled the blaze. Ken photographed the ice-encrusted building glowing under the street lamps. Before M's Pub reopened in 2017, Ken donated a framed print that now hangs inside. Even today, visitors stop by the gallery asking: "What happened?"

Ken's hope is simple: that whoever views his photos can escape into the scene — and stand exactly where he was standing.
