Hortco Greenhouses was founded in 1985 as a seasonal and holiday plant wholesale operation and in 1988 added a retail Garden Center, in Fruitland, Maryland. The next year, the Garden Center was moved to Tasley, Virginia, near its present location in Onley, Virgina. Together, owners Dreux and Catherine Alvare' have more than forty-five years experience in the horticulture industry. Most of that experience came from serving the needs of residents of the Eastern Shore. Dreux holds a degree in horticulture from Penn State University. From the 14 acre grower-location in Onley comes 60-70 percent of the plant stock offered in our garden center. Selling direct, from the grower to the customer, means less expensive and healthier plants. The four-acre Garden Center location is consistently well-stocked with a wide variety of perennials, annuals, shrubs, trees and more, specially chosen for conditions on the Shore.
