Hopefully this clears up a few of the questions that keep circling around.
I won’t be ordering additional books or gifts—bringing in new merchandise right before closing would be… impractical, to put it mildly. Getting stuck packing unsold stock is not something I’m eager to add to my list.
Regarding the Easter/spring/summer items still in the store: yes, I’m aware they’re there. I was actually grateful I had ordered the spring inventory early, since Christmas Day was spent picking my husband up from the hospital after his heart attack. His recovery lasted into April, and the week after he was released, he was in a near-fatal auto accident. I spent the following week in ICU with him and Easter Sunday taking him to visit his parents because he had just been released. His health—not seasonal items—has been my priority. Thankfully, with Mackenzie and the staff’s help, new book orders did continue. If you need a specific book, it can still be ordered; just speak with someone at the front desk.
I’ve also heard that some people are waiting for discounts. That won’t be happening. I don’t have the time or energy. When the doors close, anything unsold comes home with me, and I’ll deal with it later. So if there’s something you truly want, I recommend picking it up sooner rather than later. And just to clarify: the floor toys and play items are not for sale.
At this point, the store inventory is still for sale. I’m in conversation with a couple of genuinely interested parties, but rumors that it has sold—or that someone is buying the stock and moving locations—are not accurate. No one working in the store has information about the sale—not even Mackenzie—so contacting me directly is the only way to get correct information.
And yes, it is incredibly unfortunate that the store is closing. We’re all sad for the community. But after everything my family has faced medically this past year, I’m simply grateful that everyone is still alive. People will always come before things, even things as meaningful as this store. That said, the store is still very much “up for grabs,” so the next chapter & legend could absolutely be yours.
Since many have expressed concern about this small, iconic businesses disappearing, please keep that in mind for the next owner. The most reliable way to keep any small business open is to support it. I’ve lost count of how many times someone has said they ‘would’ order from Book Bin, but Amazon delivers overnight—or they pick up books, cards, and gifts at Walmart because they happen to already be there. Your decisions add up & that’s how small businesses end up closing their doors.
