Among the plants coming inside for the winter, these amaryllis are now needing to be forced into dormancy. I’m a bit late in starting the process to get them blooming for Christmas, but I’ll be even more excited to get some color in January or February.

Here’s how I go about it…..

Withhold water and fertilizer: In late summer, stop watering and fertilizing the plant.

Move to a cool, dark place: Place the amaryllis in a cool room with temperatures between 50–60°F.

Let the leaves die back: The leaves will turn yellow, wither, and die back. When this happens, you can cut them back to about half an inch above the bulb.
Wait for new growth: After about 10 weeks, or when you see a shoot emerging, you can move the plant back to a warm, sunny location.
Water and fertilize: Begin watering and fertilizing the plant again.

Expect to see flowers: After 4–6 weeks, you should see flower development
