The June 27, 2026 ballot will contain a proposition to amend the town’s Home Rule Charter.

The major significance of this amendment pertains to the office of Chief of Police.

Currently, according to the Charter:

1. This is an elected office.
2. Candidates must domicile within the town of Washington.

PROPOSITION

1. Application process.
2. Domiciled in Town of Washington is not required.
3. Requirements of position - 5 years of law enforcement experience or
POST (Peace Officer Standards Training) certification.
4. Selection by Town of Washington Mayor and approved by Washington’s Town Council.
