After 21 years with Blackton Inc., it’s time to congratulate Robert Manion on his retirement!

Robert joined our Orlando warehouse team in 2005, and from the beginning, he was known for being friendly, positive, hardworking, and always willing to help. Over the years, Robert gained experience, took on greater responsibility, and became someone we knew we could count on. Throughout his career, Robert had the opportunity to work with and learn from some great people, including Warehouse Managers Jerry Fern and Bubba Rhymes. Those relationships helped shape his growth at Blackton, but Robert’s work ethic and willingness to step up were always his own.

That was especially evident in 2022 when we opened our Holly Hill location. We needed someone we trusted to take responsibility for that warehouse, and Robert was the right person for the job. He knew the importance of our inventory, ran a tight ship, and took pride in making sure things were done right. When our Holly Hill operation came to an end, Robert continued his career with Blackton back in Orlando and then finally at our Leesburg location. It seems fitting that after starting with us in the Orlando warehouse 21 years ago, he finishes his career having played an important role in three different Blackton locations.

What makes Robert’s 21 years particularly special is that, despite all the experience and responsibility he gained along the way, the person retiring today is very much the same person who joined us in 2005—friendly, positive, dependable, and genuinely liked by everyone around him.

Robert, thank you for 21 years of hard work, loyalty, laughter, and countless contributions to Blackton Inc. You have been an important part of our company and, more importantly, a wonderful person to work with.

Congratulations on your retirement, Robert! We wish you nothing but happiness and plenty of well-earned time to enjoy whatever comes next. You will be missed!

In Part 1, I talked about how upgraded padding changes the ‘feel’ of your carpet and how it affects carpet fiber. Now I’d like to focus on the other benefits that may not immediately come to mind.

There are a ton of practical, behind-the-scenes benefits that turn a simple room into a much quieter and more comfortable living space. Standard carpet padding is full of tiny air pockets, but high-performance pads—especially those made with high-density memory foam, prime urethane, or heavy rubber—function as incredible sound barriers and thermal insulators. If you have kids running around upstairs, a high-quality pad muffles the heavy thumping of footsteps and prevents noise from bouncing around the house like an echo chamber.

On top of that, it traps heat. Cold concrete basements or drafty subfloors will leak chill right up through a cheap carpet, but a dense, well-insulated pad keeps the room noticeably warmer during the winter months, which can genuinely lower your monthly energy bills over time.

Finally, modern upgraded pads offer protection against everyday life that cheap foam simply cannot match. Many premium cushions now come manufactured with integrated spill barriers and moisture shields. With standard padding, if a pet has an accident or you spill a glass of juice, the liquid soaks through the carpet, drenches the cushion, and pools onto the subfloor below, where it sits, breeds mold, and causes stubborn odors that never truly go away. A quality pad with a liquid barrier keeps those spills trapped on the upper surface, allowing your vacuum or spot cleaner to pull up every drop before it can cause permanent damage underneath.

At the end of the day, carpet is just the visual shell of your floor, while the padding is the real engine running underneath. If your budget is tight, you are far better off cutting corners on the price per square foot of the carpet itself and reallocating those savings straight into the best cushion you can afford.

A cheap carpet paired with a luxury pad will always look better, feel softer, quiet the room down, and outlast an expensive carpet laid over a flimsy, bargain-bin pad every single time.

Upgrading your carpet padding is usually the last thing people think about when they are choosing a carpet, but it is actually the single most important decision you will make in the entire process.

Most of us go into a showroom, fall in love with a specific color, texture, or pattern of carpet, and then immediately treat the padding like an annoying line-item fee at checkout. We tend to opt for whatever basic, builder-grade cushion is included in the package deal to keep the total cost down. But if you talk to anyone who has worked in flooring for more than a week, they will tell you that the pad underneath your carpet does at least 70% of the heavy lifting. It is the invisible foundation holding everything together, and putting money into a high-quality cushion will transform your living space in ways you would never expect, even if the carpet sitting on top of it was bought off the clearance rack.

Think about how a cheap pair of shoes feels when you put a custom memory-foam orthopedic insert in them. The exterior of the shoe might be fake leather, but suddenly every step you take feels soft, supportive, and effortless. That is precisely what a premium carpet pad does for low-cost carpeting. When you step onto a cheap carpet that sits directly on top of thin, low-density foam or rebond, your foot immediately bottoms out against the hard concrete or plywood subfloor beneath it. You can feel the stiff backing of the carpet grinding under your heels, and over time, that constant impact tires out your feet and joints.

However, if you lay that exact same budget carpet over a thick, high-density cushion, the sensation changes completely. The floor gives under your weight, absorbs the force of your footsteps, and creates a soft, plush sink-in feeling that tricks your feet into believing you are walking on high-end luxury carpet.

Beyond just feeling fantastic underfoot, a great carpet pad is the ultimate secret weapon for longevity and durability. Carpet fibers do not actually wear down solely from people walking on them; they deteriorate because they get smashed between the sole of your shoe and the rigid subfloor below. Every step creates severe mechanical friction.

When a carpet lacks a resilient pad underneath to absorb that energy, the hard subfloor acts like an anvil, crushing the fibers, bending them out of shape, and tearing them away from the primary backing. This is why cheap carpet in busy hallways usually turns flat, matted, and frayed within a couple of years. A high-density pad acts as a shock absorber. When you step down, the pad compresses to take the blow, saving the carpet fibers from taking the brunt of the impact. Because the fibers are spared from that intense stress, they bounce right back up when you lift your foot, keeping the surface looking fresh, full, and vibrant for years longer than it normally would.
