💀 The Night Satan Came to Texas. In June 1960, the tiny town of Kopperl, Texas was asleep when the air turned to fire. As a dying thunderstorm collapsed overhead, there was no rain left to cool the superheated air plummeting toward Earth. The town’s 225 residents woke up to hurricane-force winds with 75 mph gusts. The heat was so violent it reportedly hit 140°F. That’s 20 degrees hotter than Texas’s all-time record and higher than any officially recorded temp on Earth. Across the community crops were scorched, livestock were panicked, and locals were left gasping. Meteorologists called it a ‘heat burst” for the record books. In Kopperl they just called it Satan’s Storm.

How do you lose 674 bodies? After the Okeechobee hurricane of 1928 left more than 2,500 dead across Florida and the Caribbean, the City of West Palm Beach buried 674 in a pauper’s grave. The site was soon forgotten and sold in parcels to local businesses. When bones were discovered during construction in 1990s, the site was rediscovered and bought back by the City. In 2003, a memorial was built and dedicated to the more than 600 souls interred there.
