I completely understand this if I make someone an heirloom quilt or only make one quilt for them that is intended to be sentimental / grow with them.
There are other circumstances and I think quilt makers have to be understanding.
Here are my expectations if you ever receive one of the quilts I make:
I have one friend that has received probably 7 or 8 quilts from me from the time her kids were born. I understand that you can only store so many quilts so when they outgrow them, either hand them down to another sibling / relative / someone you know or donate them to someone in need.
Here is where it gets touchy:
I made a quilt, burp rags and bib set for someone's new grandbaby. She later decided that she disagreed with me politically and didn't want anything to do with me. She blocked me on social media. My hope would be that she didn't take the quilt away from the granddaughter. For one thing, the baby is going to grow out of it anyway. For another, why teach that division from a young age? Why not keep it to yourself and know that the quilt was made with love / no political feelings attached. I knew perfectly well we disagreed when I made the quilt. I didn't care. But an election came along and she didn't like a post I made. I doubt that she kept the quilt, but I hope the baby got use out of it until they grew out of it.
I made a queen-size quilt for a friend. I loved working on it. I loved that she was so appreciative of the quilt. However, this friend was very needy. What I had thought was temporary need was actually a series of repeated behaviors over and over through the years. The relationship was toxic and time consuming. It took time away from my sons. I broke the friendship off after a lot of turmoil, thought and prayer. I do wonder if she kept the quilt. Again, I hope so. It was made with the best of intentions and love. Just because she had some issues doesn't mean I gave it under conditions.
I admit that I have trouble getting rid of the quilts I have made. I recently told my son I was going to donate a quilt I made him and he wouldn't let me even though it is damaged beyond what I want to repair. I have other quilts I considered listing for sale but my other son got really upset when he found out I was thinking about it.
