Tree Swallow Mystery Exposed

Chickadee Tragedy

This video shows why many find it difficult to like house wrens. Absolutely heartbreaking, a house wren completely dismantles a chickadee nest in about four minutes. As house wrens can utilize smaller entrance holes than chickadees, inhabit overlapping territories, and are protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, these incidents are difficult to prevent. Some studies estimate that 20% of chickadee nests are lost to house wrens.

Happy Chickadee

The female chickadee worked round the clock to construct her nest. In fact, she continued to bring nest materials and bury each of her six eggs as she laid them. She recently uncovered all eggs and began incubation. Now in the nest box full time, she’s understandably happy to see her mate with some sustenance (notice the wing fluttering).

Tree Swallow Cat Fight

This full-length video (9 minutes) may be difficult to watch. However, it captures a real-life struggle between female tree swallows. To set the stage, a resident female has laid three eggs and left the nest briefly while the male comes to stand guard. He lets a floater “girlfriend” enter. When the resident female returns and discovers his mistress, the situation gets ugly. Amazingly, it appears that the resident female won the battle and the eggs survived. Had she not been victorious, the intruder likely would have built a new nest on top of the existing one. Eggs would have perished.
