About Time Bookstore is a classy bookstore located in a typical old downtown building that has been renovated/remodeled very tastefully. A patron walks into a beautiful tiled entry and then what looks like original wood floor; the wide open room stretches up to the tall black ceiling. The walls are lined with bookshelves and row of display tables run down the middle. Each end is capped with a seating area: one more adult oriented, the other more kid/family friendly. The store has a great selection of books making it good store for a variety of readers.

Little Bean Books is a great little moody bookshop. The dark floors and ceilings and the different styled walls (blue, tan, wood featured) give more of a bedroom feel than a box store. An eclectic selection of tables, shelves, and rugs as well as the paper and pompom garland give a Bohemian feel. Add to this, a solid collection of books and you get a bookstore worthy of a visit.

Abalabix Books in Crystal Lakes is a bright little shop in little shopping center. The outside of the shop is unremarkable; I walked by and missed it at first. However once inside, you enter a colorful world with yellow walls with beautiful blue shelves with orange and purple furniture. Although you might think all those colors would look gaudy, it all works together to create a fun and cozy place to hang and shop from a solid selection of books. In particular, the kid section is very well done. Lastly the shop usually has a dog that serves as a great reading partner but he was not present when I stopped. Hopefully you will get to meet him when you stop.

Inkwell Books and Threads is a great community bookshop in Rockton. The shop not only offers a place to buy books but also serves as hangout and provides a learning community. A good selection of books from many genres are available. You can peruse them at the table or relaxing on the couches. The shop also had coloring books out and beaded bracelet making available to encourage people to spend some time there. The shop also supports literary efforts of the community and surrounding areas- hosting poetry writing events and selling self-published books of locals- including a book a poetry from a regional contest. The Inkwell is much more than a bookstore.

Galena Books & Paper is a wonderful bookstore in great town of Galena. The store has all the typical genres covered but especially does well in historical books. In addition it has tons of paper products, including a set of bookstore themed postcards. The shop like many shops in area are well taken care historic buildings of Main Street, with its original wood floors and brick facades. Make sure to check some of the other stores filled with either a local artisan or specializing in a singular item like the root beer store or olive oil store. Galena is always a treat and so is its bookstore.

Hatchards is the oldest bookstore in the United Kingdom, established over 200 years ago in 1797. The shop has lasted this long by doing so many things right. First, the shop is beautiful inside and out. I loved the floor to ceiling bookshelves with labels throughout, even the beams between rooms were bookshelves. A wooden staircase in the center made this multi-floor store seem homey. The store had thoughtful displays like one which featured several advertisements for the store through its 200 plus years. The store was happening with lots of customers and a private event on the top floor. Most importantly, they had great employees-one explaining the store’s connection to “Peter the Rabbit” and another discussing some great examples of British satire. I can imagine this store lasting another 200 plus years.

Okay, I am breaking my rule of featuring indie bookstore but in my defense this Waterstone located near Piccadilly Circus in London is five stories of bookstore. Each floor contains different genres of book. You enter on a level that contains the best sellers and new releases as well as other popular choices. Head down a flight to a lovely little cafe and more books including an area that they do a special features (comics during my trip). The other floors had everything you’d expect from a romance to fantasy to science fiction to mysteries and the cutest children’s area. It also had some unexpected items like a whole section dedicated to manga and arts and crafts section that not only included books on the topic but the supplies as well. It also has a full restaurant as well.

John Sandoe Books is everything I imagine a quintessential English bookstore to be. I love the classy old store front with big multi-paned windows. The store is three levels connected by narrow twisty staircases. Each floor is packed with books; it was so fun to explore, finding beautiful pop-up children books. The best is the window seats upstairs where you can peruse a book as you look at the beautiful flowers and the street below. Located just off Kings Road, it’s a great area and shop to visit.

I sometimes worry that I’ve bought too many books but this quote helps correct that perception.
