Samsung is reportedly working on floating data centers that could move part of its AI computing infrastructure offshore.

The idea is to place powerful computing systems on floating structures at sea, where they could support the fast-growing demand for artificial intelligence.

AI data centers need large amounts of electricity and cooling. As AI use grows, companies are looking for new ways to manage heat, save land space, and reduce pressure on traditional facilities.

Using seawater for cooling could help remove heat from servers more efficiently. This may be especially useful for AI systems, which can generate intense heat when training or running large models.

The concept also fits with earlier research into water-based data centers. Microsoft’s Project Natick Phase 2 tested an underwater data center and reported strong reliability results, showing that marine environments can be explored as part of future computing infrastructure.

If Samsung can make the technology practical and scalable, floating data centers could become a new direction for AI infrastructure. They could change how companies think about computing, cooling, energy use, and physical space.
