I’m not saying I’m the reason JoAnn went out of business, but I’m not not saying that either.

art·ist /ˈärdəst/ noun — a person who practices any of the various creative arts.

I’m an artist.

The kind that works in cotton and corduroy. The kind whose canvas is a cutting mat and whose brushes are needles and thread. The kind who spent years not calling herself an artist because she “just sewed things.”

But here’s what I’ve learned: art is just making something beautiful that didn’t exist before. And by that definition? Every sewist, every quilter, every maker who has ever cut a piece of fabric and turned it into something wonderful is an artist.

You don’t have to paint to be an artist. You don’t have to sculpt. You just have to make.

So yes. I’m an artist. And if you make things with your hands — so are you.

There’s something about naming a candle that makes it feel real. Sometimes the name comes to me before I even know the scent. Sometimes I need to make the candle first and then after smelling it the name comes to me. Sometimes it’s much harder. It’s surprising how important the name is. Choose the wrong name and the candle doesn’t sell - even if it’s a really good candle.

These three I knew right away what their names should be. Sunday Blooms. Morning Dew. Pink Lemonade Stand. Each one poured by hand, each one chosen to capture a specific feeling — the kind of feeling you get on a slow Saturday morning when you’re strolling the farmers market. That fresh early morning dew when you first arrive, the refreshing lemonade you sip as you stroll the market, and the bouquet you wake up to the next day.

I’ve been making candles for a while now but I still love this part. The moment a scent gets a name and suddenly it becomes something more than wax and fragrance. It becomes a memory. A moment. A feeling you can light up on a Tuesday when you need a little something extra.

These are part of the Gingham & Blooms collection and they make me really happy. I hope they make you happy too.
