Hibiscus syriacus Tahiti™ brings bold summer color to the landscape with large, semi-double, deep pink-purple flowers accented by a dramatic deep red center.

This upright Rose of Sharon typically reaches about 5–8 feet tall and blooms from midsummer into fall, making it a great choice for adding color when many spring-flowering shrubs have finished. It performs best in full sun and is tolerant of heat, drought, and a range of soil conditions once established. (Missouri Botanical Garden)

Buxus sempervirens ‘Dee Runk’ is a distinctive upright boxwood with a narrow, conical habit—perfect for adding evergreen structure without taking up a lot of horizontal space.

Maturing around 8–10 feet tall while remaining only a few feet wide, ‘Dee Runk’ works beautifully as a vertical accent, narrow hedge, or architectural evergreen in formal and traditional landscapes. It performs in sun to part shade and is hardy in USDA Zones 6–8. (Missouri Botanical Garden)

Its naturally upright form also means it can provide that classic clipped-boxwood look with less shaping than broader-growing selections.

Ginkgo biloba ‘The President’ — Presidential Gold® — is a tough, adaptable selection chosen by renowned horticulturist Dr. Michael Dirr.

Growing approximately 50 feet tall by 40 feet wide, Presidential GoldÂŽ develops a strong central leader, full branching and a dense, upright crown. It tolerates a wide range of soil types and pH levels, along with heat, compacted soils and urban conditions, making it an excellent choice for street trees and other challenging landscape sites.

Ginkgos have separate male and female trees. Presidential GoldÂŽ is a male, seedless selection, so you get the distinctive fan-shaped foliage and brilliant golden fall color without the notoriously foul-smelling fleshy seeds produced by female trees.

Long-lived, adaptable and remarkably resistant to serious pest and disease problems — ginkgo really is about as tough as they come.

Looking for an alternative to boxwood? Euonymus japonicus offers dense evergreen foliage and a similar formal look without the boxwood blight and box tree moth concerns.

Euonymus japonicus ‘Green Spire’ has an upright, narrow habit that works beautifully for hedging, structure, and vertical accents, while E. japonicus ‘Microphyllus’ has notably small leaves that give it a fine-textured, boxwood-like appearance.

Both are adaptable, easy-care evergreens that respond well to pruning and can be maintained for a neat, formal look.

Hibiscus syriacus ‘Blue Chiffon’ brings elegant, lacy blue-lavender blooms to the garden from midsummer into fall. Bred as part of the Chiffon series, it produces little to no viable seed, helping reduce the unwanted self-seeding often associated with traditional Rose of Sharon. Adaptable to a wide range of well-drained soil types and known for its good deer resistance, it’s an easy-care shrub that delivers reliable late-season color year after year.

Aesculus parviflora (Bottlebrush Buckeye) is one of the finest flowering shrubs for part shade. In early to mid-summer, it produces striking upright panicles of fragrant white flowers that can reach 8–12 inches long, attracting butterflies, bees, and other pollinators when many other shrubs have finished blooming.

Native to the southeastern United States, this large, suckering deciduous shrub forms broad colonies over time, making it an excellent choice for woodland gardens, naturalized landscapes, and erosion control. Its handsome palmate foliage turns rich yellow in fall, adding another season of interest. It also offers good resistance to deer browsing once established.
