Okay... First we just want to say we love our customers. But... We need to talk!
We spend hours each day watering our trees. When you buy them and we are holding them for you, we're also watering them so they look their best for their new home.
Please, dear friends, please remember that these plants are living things. Like you, me, all our fur babies, and all living things -- these plants NEED WATER to survive!! When you notice the leaves are sad, wilted, stressed, droopy.... That's their way of panting. That's their way of asking for a drink. Most of the time, we tell new owners to water at least once a day and at least 5 to 10 gallons depending on your soil and the size of the tree, especially when the daily temperatures are 85+. But!! If you water at 7am and by 1pm you notice your plant is wilted, it's asking you for a drink! By all means, water it!
Also, please don't water the leaves. They don't love it, even though it looks to us like it would be refreshing, it will burn their leaves! Needles on evergreens are different -- They can be watered!
Rain ☔ don't count on it! Unless we have a torrential downpour, just consider rain as an appetizer for your plants. As a general rule, 1 inch of water only soaks into the ground around 6 inches. That's not enough to saturate the root ball. While fertilizer and other nutrition issues are very important -- nothing is as important as proper watering!
But what if I'm overwatering?!? 😫 I doubt it 😆 and you should get a prize because you would be one in a million. It takes a bit longer to notice over watering because most plants can sit in a bucket of water for several days before they would start to complain. Usually, the leaves won't suddenly wilt. They will gradually yellow and the tree will look like it's very sad. But it seriously won't happen over night!
If you think you're overwatering a newly planted tree, gently dig around the base and see if it's holding water. If it smells like sulphur, rotten, and disgusting, yeah ok.... You overwatered. If it's dry, water is needed!!
