Today kicks off ! Everyone knows how passionate we are about the freedom to read and how vehemently we are opposed to censorship!

Some might say books aren’t “banned”, but arguing semantics misses the point and distracts from the real threat: taking away our freedom to read what we choose and access to information and knowledge. And knowledge is power.

Did you know that a Blue Valley Board of Education member had To Kill a Mockingbird removed from the school curriculum? That member stood right in my store in 2021 and told me so (hopefully it’s back in the curriculum). Was the book still accessible to students in the school library? Probably. BUT, this is how banning starts. It’s insidious, with one person or group “challenging” a book in one school or library, removing it from the curriculum in another school district, etc.

We might not live in a country where the publication of certain books is forbidden and punishable by law or where important literary works that go against the government are burned - thankfully!
Instead, we have “challenges” happening in small groups here and there, so it seems like just a bunch of complainers and it doesn’t affect us as long as we can still buy it at a bookstore (for now) so it may be annoying but nothing to worry about. This is how it happens.

Currently, major AI developers are buying books in bulk, slicing off the binding, and scanning the pages for AI language training. The bindings are discarded and the pages shredded. Many of these books are out of print. Maybe it’s too expensive to leave the books intact, scan them, and put them back into circulation. Maybe there are other reasons for destroying them. The thought of any physical book, regardless of content, being removed permanently from our society, is heartbreaking and just feels wrong.

So on this first day of Banned Books Week, The Last Copy Society is being established as a 501c3 organization. Its purpose is to preserve physical copies of books, provide access to them, and protect the freedom to read them. Stay tuned!
