Are we building rods too light? 👀

Lightweight components can make a great rod, but lighter doesn’t automatically mean better. Balance, swing weight, comfort, durability, and how the rod actually feels in your hand all matter.

So maybe the better question isn’t “How light can I make it?”

It’s “Where does this rod actually need weight?”

We break down the debate in the latest Mud Hole Journal.

The urchin bait trend was REAL. 👀🔥

But what actually makes them so effective?

Urchin baits bring a compact profile and tons of movement to the water, making them a unique option for targeting bass in a variety of situations.

Want to know how to rig them, where to fish them, and how to get the most out of them?

We broke it all down in the latest Mud Hole Gear Guide.

Ever wondered what “5 weight” actually means on a fly rod? 🎣

It’s not a power rating. In this episode, we break down where the 5 weight comes from, how fly blanks are measured, and how that rating connects to the weight of the fly line.

Using a 9’ 5-weight Mud Hole Color Series blank, we’re getting into the numbers behind the rating and what it actually means for your build.

Lake Monroe. November 22. $1,000 Big Bass. 🎣💰

The St. Johns Showdown is bringing the competition to Lake Monroe with 100% payback plus a $1,000 Big Bass prize sponsored by Southern Development and Construction.

And it’s about more than the tournament. SDC is also supporting the Mighty River Recovery Bass Care Team, helping make sure the fish caught during the tournament make it back to the river healthy.

Huge thanks to SDC for supporting the St. Johns and our local fishing community!
