Popper season is rolling! The weather is hot but the fishing has been 🔥🔥 Take advantage of it while you can and get out there! Floating or wading, just go! Our bass are keyed in on baitfish right now and looking up. We are seeing numerous bass blitzing bait every day.

We know everyone is sad to hear about the suspended trout stocking on the Lower Illinois but we have some fantastic warm water opportunities all around us. There is more to fly fishing than just trout!

The fishing on our smallmouth rivers is very user friendly right now with lower flows and clear water. You don’t need a boat. You don’t need an 8wt. Wade fishing with a 5-6wt, floating line, and a handful of select bugs will get it done.

Swing by the shop to get the goods, some intel, and a little guidance on how to do it! If you’re ready to jump to the next level for smallmouth fishing, we have everything you need with rods, reels, fly lines, and flies!

Fishing Report

Trout…
As many of you have heard, the OKWD ended trout stocking last week on the Lower Illinois until more trout can be purchased and conditions improve on the river. Until then, there are still trout to be caught!

The typical stuff is still working: Midges, PTs, Eggs, SJWs, Sowbugs, etc etc

Smallmouth…
Fishing is great! Popper season is rolling right now. You know we love the MFC Bombshell popper or the GnarlyHead popper. White, black, or chartreuse have been 🔥 lately! Pop them slow and let it drift some.

Streamer side of things…full intermediate or light sink tip fly lines are best as flows continue to drop out. Murdich minnows, GCs, BangTails, Clousers, Deceivers, Mini Dungeons are all in play right now. Fish the color that you’re confident in and fish it out front! The fish are definitely moving into the shoals with the broken water and chunk rock bottoms as the water temps rise. Also, watch the tailouts above the shoals…we have seen some big bass hanging there from time to time in the evenings!

Striper…
Fishing in town (Arkansas River) is still generally on hold as flows continue to crank out from Keystone Dam. This will be great for fall fishing though. Just be patient. It’ll come…

Stripers over on the Lower are still in play! Tons of pressure on these fish right now from conventional fisherman both from the bank and boat right now. Be patient and fish the spots with some stealth. Early and late is key right now generally to get some numbers.

Bucktail deceivers, GCs, Clousers, ShuttleCocks, Half & Halfs in shad colors or chart/white have been productive!

We are temporarily suspending trout stocking on the Lower Illinois River. Photo credit: Scott Hood

Stocking trout is a complex process that depends on trout availability from hatcheries. We conduct two types of stockings. Seasonal stockings come from private hatcheries and occur from October through June. Mitigation trout are provided by U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) hatcheries based out of Arkansas during and after the seasonal stocking season.

Last year's flooding significantly impacted USFWS hatchery production, resulting in the loss of approximately two years' worth of trout. Although the hatchery was not a complete loss, the flooding greatly reduced production and has affected the availability of trout for stocking.

The hatchery currently has trout in the 3–4" size range. It takes approximately 19–22 months for trout to reach a stocking size of 9-11", so recovery will take time. Hatchery staff are working diligently to rebuild production while also raising fish for future stocking seasons. This shortage affects all public waters that receive trout from this hatchery.

For perspective, so far about 36,000 trout have been stocked in the Lower Illinois River in 2026.

We are working closely with hatchery managers and will resume stocking as soon as fish become available. We appreciate your patience and understanding and will continue to provide updates as new information becomes available in September.
