but those who hope in the Lord

They will soar on wings like eagles;
they will run and not grow weary,
they will walk and not be faint.

As a hunter, I have applied for a sheep tag for more than 20 years. I know others who have waited many years for trophy elk or moose tags. Every year, I submit another application knowing the odds are long but hoping this may be the year. It is easy to wonder if your opportunity will ever come. Many of God’s blessings also require seasons of waiting. The Bible is full of examples, from Abraham waiting for Isaac to David waiting to become king. Waiting is often where God strengthens our faith before delivering His promise. If you’ve prayed for something for 20 years, it’s reasonable to believe you will appreciate it more than the person who receives it immediately. God may not answer our prayers on our timetable. Perhaps He is preparing us to appreciate the blessing He already intends to give. Waiting isn’t easy, but it is rarely wasted.

The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.”

Experienced hunters tend to obsess over the wind. On more than one occasion I have changed my plans at the last minute due to an unexpected wind direction. The wind is out of our control so we can only observe it and adapt to it. Fighting it is a battle we will never win. One of the hardest lessons in the Christian life is realizing that God doesn’t adjust His plans to fit ours. Too often, we ask Him to bless the direction we have already chosen instead of asking Him which direction He wants us to go. An experienced hunter will always adjust to the wind. When God redirects your path, trust Him enough to follow where He leads.

Psalm 51:10 NIV
"Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me."

Any archer knows that a bowstring will eventually wear out. It may continue to function as it stretches but the older it gets the more the bow will get out of tune. Eventually, it will fail. Thankfully, most bowhunters don't wait until it breaks to have it maintained. Our spiritual lives need maintenance too. We must pray regularly, study our Bibles, and keep our relationship with God strong so we are in tune with Him.

"Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil."

If you have hunted much at all, you have missed an opportunity at a shot. Maybe you were not settled in or distracted by your phone only to look up and see a buck disappearing into the brush. Life is full of opportunities to encourage others, share your faith, or help someone in need. If we aren't paying attention, we may miss them. Ask God to help you recognize the opportunities that are in front of you each and every day.

"Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them..."

Anyone who has searched for shed antlers knows the excitement of finding one you've been looking for. Hours of walking can be rewarded by a single discovery hidden in the leaves. Jesus tells us that Heaven rejoices when one lost person is found. Just as we search for that hidden antler, Christ seeks those who are far from Him. The difference is He never gives up the search.

Instead, the greatest among you should be like the youngest, and the one who rules like the one who serves. 27 For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves.

If you have ever been fortunate enough to see animals fighting in the wild, you understand how intense the battle for dominance can be. Two alpha males battling for superiority knowing only one will win and lay claim to being the greatest in his domain. Jesus Christ came to this Earth to give us the perfect example of being a servant leader. He lead by example and always wanted to make those around him better. God has called us as Christians to serve others through love following His perfect example.
