THE LION’S TRACK ENDED AT A TREE—BUT THE LION WAS GONE

In a hunting account published in 1908, an old western guide named Jake told one of the strangest mountain-lion stories ever passed around a campfire.

A pack of hounds had struck a lion track in fresh snow.

They trailed it steadily through the timber until the tracks led directly beneath a tree—and stopped.

The guide looked into the branches.

No lion.

He circled the tree, expecting to find where the cat had jumped down and slipped away.

There were no lion tracks leaving in any direction.

It was as though the animal had climbed that tree and vanished into the winter air.

There was only one other trail in the snow: the tracks of an elk that had passed beneath the tree.

The pack had been carefully trained to run mountain lions and bobcats. They knew better than to bother an elk track.

But one old bloodhound lowered his head and started trailing the elk.

The guide called him back.

The bloodhound kept going.

The guide called again, but the dog refused to leave that trail. Before long, the rest of the pack trusted him enough to follow.

For nearly a quarter of a mile, the hounds ran nothing but elk tracks.

Then the guide reached a torn-up patch of snow.

There were signs of a violent struggle, followed by the deep impression of a large animal hitting the ground.

And leading away from that spot were the missing mountain lion’s tracks.

The bloodhound took them without hesitation.

A short distance later, the pack began hammering beneath a piñon tree. When the guide arrived, he looked up and saw the lion sitting in the branches.

Only then did the whole strange trail make sense.

The lion had apparently waited in the first tree until an elk passed beneath it. Then the cat dropped onto the elk’s back trying to bring the animal down.

The elk never fell.

It fought its way through the snow with the lion clinging to its back. That was why no cat tracks left the first tree: the lion’s feet had never touched the ground.

For nearly a quarter of a mile, the elk carried its attacker before finally throwing the cat off. The impression in the snow marked where the lion landed and the two animals separated.

The guide had looked at those elk tracks and seen the wrong animal.

That bloodhound smelled the same tracks and knew the lion was still with them.

He didn’t lose the trail.

He understood what had happened.

The men had read the tracks.
That old hound had read the whole story.

—Retold from a campfire account recorded by Edgar F. Randolph in Inter-Ocean Hunting Tales, published in 1908.

Man, life can be summed up in a c**n hunt at times.. Snow White is due to hunt her final super stakes in the next couple weeks.. I always thought she would be one of those hounds, that would just continue to get better with age.. However, after deciding to raise a litter off of her, and the summer heat.. She has been laid up, and I am just now starting back to hunting her.

Last winter she decided to start treeing possums, I guess I should have turned it up to 18 on the tickle machine. I just thought with her sorry tree style, and as smart as she was it would be an easy quick fix, and I didn’t want to risk making her a sorrier tree dog..

Well, last night. I was going to make a couple quick drops, and get in bed by eleven or so.. Needless to say life and a c**nhunt can sometimes resemble each other.. Your plans will not always go the way you want, after about the fourth possum, the second screaming fast game race, that was cut off, Snow White treed a racc**n at around 3 am, and I got to love on her.. I could have quit, I could have given up, I could have just left her and went home..However, she has trust in me to be there, and she must never lose faith that I’m there watching over her. Sure, I have to remind her from time to time, that her unbelievable drive has to be kept in check.. However, that is my job to guide and direct her..

As soon, as I started thinking, I’m just going to leave her sorry tail. Because there was a part of me saying, “I am about mad enough that she may find, the ol pile tonight”.. That, is when I began to thinking: He didn’t, He has been there through it all, He guides me, He reveals Himself when I need Him the most. Oh, and He loves on me when I don’t deserve any of His love..

Do not know where you at, you may be on your fourth possum, or head first in a screaming hog race with all your buddies!! You ain’t never to far from the Masters Call!! Can you still feel that tickle, He loves us, even though we do not deserve it!!

Love y’all, but He loves yall the most!!
