Did you know growing a lawn by seed takes the same steps as planting a new sod lawn? Having seed on hand is always a good idea. Even with a sod installation, it’s important to understand how to overseed areas in case of damage from animals, heavy traffic or other problems. Remember: Correct compost coverage and consistent soil moisture is important! This will help you overcome the biggest obstacle of all = GERMINATION. Too much moisture, seed washes away. Too little moisture, and the seed will dry out. You will need to “babysit” the seed for a few days at least, and no mowing for at least 3 weeks. It will take 6 months to achieve the consistent beautiful look of freshly installed sod harvested by Southland, so be patient! University of Illinois research in inner-city neighborhoods found that grassy areas that provide greenery but still preserve openness may deter crime. Residents who lived near open grassy areas perceived these areas as safer than other open, non-grassy areas, and they reported feeling safer.
